Urban Fieldwork
Describe the fieldwork and research you would undertake in order to investigate why some urban areas are in need of rebranding (15 marks)
Primary fieldwork consists of things like a questionnaire, graffiti survey, Environmental impact assessment, pedestrian and car counts etc. Secondary research is data that is collected from a variety of sources for example a census, the government, national statistics, city council etc.
In many cities in the UK such as Birmingham and Margate that are in the nature of industrial decline, this has led to much rebranding of the city or CBD.

This tells you whether an area needs rebranding or not as by using an Internet blog, there are so many people that have access to this, such as locals who would give their honest opinions. By having opinions from the public, you can take so many things into account. This is an easy source of gathering information from different types of people who have either visited the place, seen photographs or who are residents.
A good questionnaire would gather information about the image of the place, its reputation and its problems. I would ask a sample of about 100 people, all over the town, or a CBD. Some of the questions on the questionnaire could include; what do you think the council should do? Are you happy with the shops in the area? Why do you think so many buildings are derelict? What are your feelings about the vandalism? Do you think this area would benefit from rebranding?
I would collect my secondary data from the city council website- this would allow me to see facts about the place. I would also research into seeing the census- this would give me useful statistics about my chosen area. I would also gather information from the government and perhaps collect photos off google earth etc. All the statistics, figures, facts and photos would tell me various things about if the place needs rebranding. Such as statistics for closure of retail stores would tell me we need to take action as well as seeing photos of run down
