2. British Acts and Colonial Responses after the F&I War:
King George III begins restricting colonies
Proclamation Line of 1763 – no longer could colonials settle west of the Appalachian Mountains
Stamp Act (1765) & colonial response – tax on ALL paper items, 1st direct tax, affected everyone, get stamp to show proof of paying the tax; Colonials believe in self government, protest long and loud which leads to tax repeal
Townshend Acts (1767) – tax on tea, paint, lead, and glass, used to raise revenue for war debt, money used to pay Government salaries, Sam Adams circulates letters to all other colonies to protest/boycott
Boston Massacre – first blood of the revolution, competing with British for jobs, don’t like the British military bossing them around
Tea Act and Party with Intolerable/Coercive Acts (1773) – British had repealed all taxes EXCEPT for the Tea Act, many parties resisted purchasing the British tea; British then put the Intolerable/Coercive Acts into place to scare the colonist and tell them “don’t mess with us,” they shut off the Boston ports, brought in many British troops, and announced that all court cases would be done outside of Boston
Sam Adams – mouth of the Revolution
