To begin, animal research has played a vital part in nearly every medical breakthrough over the last decade. Improving human health is considered vital and justifies the use of animals in research. Even though there are researchers from the University of Minnesota who are against animal testing for cosmetics, animal testing for medical reasons and the development of new drugs and cures for diseases is supported1. Many medical treatments would not have been possible to find if it was not by animal testing, including some cures for cancer and HIV drugs, insulin, antibiotics, vaccines and many more2. Cancer is a very complex disease and research geared towards learning more about its origin, progression, and treatments. Medical researches use animals to study cancer for a variety of reasons. Animals have shorter lifespans and more rapid generation times compared to humans, and disease progression moves forward at a more rapid pace, so results of studies using animals as models are obtained quicker3. The important reason why animals are used as models is because they represent actual living systems, rather than computerized models which will predict what will actually occur in people3.In the last 40 years, the survival from cancer has doubled, and this simply would not have been possible without animal research4. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States, killing more people than breast, prostate, colon and pancreas cancers combined5. The National Cancer Institute in 2001 stressed the dire need for research relying on mouse models of lung cancer and focusing on understanding, preventing, and detecting lung cancer and developing novel
