Using Practical Wisdom
For most people, there is a kind of collective dissatisfaction in our mind. This kind of dissatisfaction occurs in both the way institution run in our society and the way we use when we do our own work. We are worry about whether social institutions such as banks, schools are doing the right things to have our interest at heart, whether we should trust them or not and whether our choice itself is the right thing.
To respond this sort of dissatisfaction, there are two measures. From the external view, more rules should be made. These rules are made to let people standardize in a limit or scope in order to guarantee them to do the right thing. From the point of view of human being (internal view), clever incentives should be made for people to let them serve our interests out of their own interests or their pure selfishness.
Both rules and incentives have positive effect on dealing this general dissatisfaction: 1, more and more rules are passed to regulate the problems which have already happened in order to make sure that these problems will not happen again .2, right incentives are used to make people do the right things to ensure the security of our interests.
But an important thing is that the negative consequences of rules and incentives do damage the original intention of why we create rules and incentives. (The original intention is to ensure people to know what the right things are and how to do the right things). 1, there is no set of rules that will get us what we need because rules only protect the problems have happened, and sometimes rules restrict people to make a flexible choice when new problems occurred. 2, incentives make a person be addicted to it, which means it creates people only do things for incentives. These two sides of negative effects means relying on rules and incentives demoralize professional activity: 1, demoralize the people who are engaged in the activity 2, demoralize the activity itself.

    The principle of utility addresses that actions are right to the extent that they promote happiness and wrong to the extent that they produce unhappiness. When the issue of individual rights and the public’s protection is addressed this philosophy came to mind. As individuals the laws that govern our country, states, cities, ect. all give as rights as human being that are meant to in no way harm the lives or affect the well being of others around us but to allow all humans to live comfortably, and at peace with those around us. When people choose to take those rights that we are given into their own hands and make negative out of them and stretch them into harmful actions, and those actions become wrong and add to producing an unhappy environment and unhappy people there become a problem. For example, people have the right to the freedom of speech, but when you use freedom of speech to threaten or speak of harming another human being, the public’s and individual protection is now at risk, and those actions have just produced an unhappy environment. When balancing the use of reward and the punishment in the criminal justice system, punishment is generally looked at as good while the offender himself or herself is most directly affected by the punishment the positive would be the impact on the larger community and society. So why do offenders receive punishment and then turn around and in some cases get rewarded?     Wisdom isn’t bound to specific authorities or contained within political boundaries. The Egyptian Instruction of Amenemope shares a section with the Hebrew Book of Proverbs. Hippocrates’ Aphorisms was probably studied at the Academy of Gondishapur in Persia in the sixth and seventh centuries. The wisdom shared in most of these texts share some similarities. As it can be observed in the above given excerpt, humility and honesty are morals which even the Bhagavad Gita denotes. Wisdom is not bound to specific cultures or authorities but while certain sayings are the building blocks of wisdom the rest may differ. The book of job is a good example of such difference. It is a wisdom literature but since it is a story which imparts religion mostly, its morals differ from what a normal society has for years considered good manners. The book of job is a justification of suffering when it is given by God. The morals prescribed by the all the five books i.e. Book of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs are part of the Old Testament and hence their morals are married with the religion. In the Bhagavad Gita or the Epic of Gilgamesh for example the wisdom imparted is not dependent on religion. In the epic of Gilgamesh, we learn that arrogance, greed and immortality are things man should not have. The Bhagavad Gita imparts the importance of compassion and sacrifice, but also emphasizes that keeping a clear mind requires a healthy body and diet. Such things are not tied to one specific religion and are universal in nature. The Book of Job also teaches us about patience as can be evinced in current society which often uses the saying – “patience of Job.” Wisdom literature is addressed especially to the individual rather than to the whole of society in attempt to arouse change in an entire social order.…
