The Unites States navy had great food on their ships it was supposedly the best in the military. The food was great for moral it was like a little piece of home for the sailors of home. Sailors were well fed aboard the ships they never complained. There were two mess halls one for crew members and another for officers. Over all conditions were good and sailors stayed comfortable. The U.S.S. Iowa could carry a lot of food they could store 100 tons of fresh fruit and veggies, 650 tons of dried goods also 84 tons of frozen meat ( http://www.pacificbattleship.com). They stored the food in two large freezers located in the back of the kitchen. They served three meals a day and special meals during holidays. The men aboard were lucky to get such great food so far from home (http://www.navy.mil).The cooks probably had to start cooking in the morning to prepare the necessary amount of food to feed all the crew. They had many options to eat there was no complaint on food
The main mess hall had many seats and had the basic cooking equipment. The food was given out on a cafeteria style tray slide counter. It had 3 cafeteria food tables 1 ice cream machine and a salad bar table (http://www.youtube.com/). It had plenty of seats for all the sailors it had a table with two chairs attached to the base of each table. The mess hall could accommodate plenty of men with room to spare.
The main mess hall is open four times a day for 10 hours all together. the basic rules where grab your tray grab your grub grab your seat usually in that order. all though waiting in line was tedious it was well worth it after a hard working shift. For breakfast one of the common things they ate where Bacon and eggs and biscuits and gravy the typical morning household food.
