Everyone struggles with something, whether it is building muscle, losing weight or just being healthier in general. Lt. Nelson Guadalupe is here to help as the Joint Task Force Guantanamo Dietician. He strives to educate the units on proper nutrition and how to best achieve one’s personal fitness goals. Guadalupe covered the basics of calorie counting, nutrition, sports performance and dietary supplements in one of his sports nutrition and weight loss classes, July 29. There are classes going on every other Tuesday at the Primary Care Clinic in the hospital on U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. “It is a good experience,” said Zachery Wadas, a JTF GTMO Trooper. “Lt. Guadalupe covers a lot of information. It’s great knowledge about diets, exercise and what it takes to lose weight.” …show more content…
His sessions consist of attending the sports nutrition and weight loss class so that those in attendance can obtain a basic knowledge of nutrition and how things work. He creates an individualized plan for each and every person he sees. He covers how many calories to consume, a basic diet plan for those looking to lose weight and individualized workout plans. He strongly advocates for individuals to use the trainers available at the gym to help achieve their health and fitness goals.
Eating healthy from the galleys can be(PASSIVE) a struggle. Guadalupe says to look at the plate from a little bit of a distance. Everyone’s palms are unique to their bodies and will help guide with portions sizes. Troopers should eat a palm-sized portion of carbs such as rice, pasta, bread or something similar like potatoes; a palm sized portion of lean meats such as chicken breast or really lean steak; and the rest of the plate should be fruits and vegetables. Guadalupe advocates more for vegetables than fruits to increase metabolisms, which is what a lot of people struggle with -- mainly because of sedentary

    Jane Does, a 27 year old sedentary Hispanic female, who was approached by us to participate in our program. goal was of losing weight. The initial ACSM risk stratification diagnosis indicated a body composition of 27% body fat at 137 lbs with a height of 5’6. The family medical history indicated a history of heart disease on the paternal and maternal side of the family. According to ACSM risk stratification guidelines she does not need a referral from a physician for exercise clearance. Measures regarding examining body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength/endurance, and flexibility were taken. Based upon the results a moderate intensity (60%-70% HRR/VO2R) a Cardiorespiratory and Resistance training program was designed for Jane Doe. A negative caloric balance program was established based upon her current RMR and newly designed exercise prescription. Muscle strength and endurance programs were designed to increase metabolic activity and rate mas well to increase fat free mass.
