Vancouver Art Gallery Field Trip
After a careful and well-organized arrangement by our English teacher Simon, on July 25, 2012 , in a sunshine morning with vernal breezes on our face, we finally visited the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver for a tour on the exhibit “Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters”. I had been expected to visit the Art of Palace for long time. Every time in the last 10 years when I passed by the VAG or in the parade gathering to listen the addresses of MP Jenny Kwan and Premier Christy Clark in front of VAG, I always wondered what’s famous treasures stored there and what’s kind of palace inside it. But I had never been inside VAG before this trip. I like paintings since I was young. I had been inspired by “Running Horse” of Xu, Beihong , and had been obsessed by “Swimming Shrimp” of Zhang, Daqing, the modern masters in China, but I have known nothing about the western oil painting. It was my first time that I had been in such close to appreciate the masterpieces of western modern masters, to touch the soul and feeling of the artistes, and to know their extraordinary life experiences – a road with filled twists and turns as well as the fascinating insight to the nature. I enjoyed the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse in the tour after learning. It was an unforgettable trip in my life and could be called the biggest gain from my English 11 class.
This exhibition was sponsored by the family of two Baltimore Ladies, Ms. Claribel Cone and Ms. Etta Cone who amassed these masterpieces with whole life and money in the last century . As their passion to the paintings and persistent efforts of collection, we can have the opportunity to access those works today. So in the second section of the exhibition, the organizer used lots of ink and space to introduce biography of the Baltimore Ladies and their contribution to the modern art.
