In 1847, the founders of the Vegetarian Society of Great Britain created the term “vegetarianism”. Ever since the existence of diet, the consumption of only vegetables was around. During the 1990’s, food not containing meat has increased due to many doctors and medical organizations claiming that reducing the intake of meat could result in the reduction of developing degenerative diseases. The lifestyle of vegetarians goes all the way back to one of the oldest cultures, the Hindus. Due to their religious belief, the Hindus consumed a diet of only vegetables. According to the Hindu belief, if meat is not eaten, one can acquire beauty, great memory, and a longer life. Many of the religious beliefs, however, are different depending on the cultural stature. Vegetarianism is also a medicinal path in curing some of the common illnesses, like the common cold. Currently, high cholesterol, type two diabetes, and heart disease have become a problem to many individuals. In some cases, vegetarian diets is implemented to help lower the effects related to high cholesterol. This, in turn, lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and/or diabetes.
