Vegetarianism is one of the fastest growing movements in Britain with around at least 4 million vegetarians in the country. Vegetarians don’t eat the meat or skin of any animals and some extreme vegetarians calls ‘vegans’ don’t eat or drink anything that is animal related. In the UK 2 and a half million cattle and chickens, get killed to satisfy our need for meat. Before the animals even get killed inhumanely for our consumption they are kept in squalid conditions such as camped areas, no fresh air or social contact. Many of the animals die or contract deadly diseases by this so many of the animals that get sent for slaughter die before arriving there anyway. By law animals should be stunned before being killed so they get the least amount of pain possible. However, many slaughter houses don’t do this or sometimes stunning them doesn’t work so the animals are killed while being fully conscious. I personally believe that it is wrong to kill animals like this because they feel and act in the same way in which human’s do, that is why I have recently become a vegetarian because the treatment of animals while they are alive is disgusting. You wouldn’t treat your pet like this so why should people do it to other animals?
Research has found that eating meat isn’t actually healthy for you as you can get all the proteins and fibres you need from just eating fruit and vegetables. By eating vegetables it can help you ward off disease as it can prevent heart disease and lower the risk of cancer. It can also help to keep your weight down as statistics have shown that 15% of all children aged 6-19 are overweight. By not eating meat you could live longer as animal products can block up your arteries. So if eating meat was banned in Britain there would be fewer deaths of heart attacks, less food poisoning cases and more healthier and energetic people.
You may not believe that eating meat is damaging to the environment, but it’s been proven that it
