These participants ranged in age from 18 to 51 years of age. The traumatic experience (i.e. car accident, horse-related accident, or work-related accident) happened between 10 months to 11 years before the research was conducted. All of the participants had experienced trauma that affected them in physical and psychological ways.…
The psychological trauma caused by sexual assault is most evident in the film as well as the character: Jay Heights. Throughout the film we slowly witness Jay’s mental barrier deteriorating, and her regressing into child-like behavior because of the curse. During many scenes where she is in her house she is very vigilant of her surroundings. One specific scene is when she observes someone go into Greg’s house. Even though Greg is capable of protecting himself she is restless and constantly checking to see if she will be “molested” by the curse once again. Various other child-like tendency’s that Jay starts to develop is fleeing to places that make her feel safe but are not necessarily safe. For instance, to get away from the first person that…
There is significant stress associated with the use of deadly force - having to kill another human being (Volpe & Anderson, 1998). No officer is ever emotionally ready to kill another human being. Many officers say that the first thing that came to mind after they fired the fatal bullet was "Thou shall not kill." All of these stressors make police work different from other professions. Of course, the on-going, day-to-day exposure to murders, assaults, rapes, child abuse, domestic violence and "man's inhumanity to man" intensifies this stress-related burden. Vicarious Trauma is a diagnostic term used to depict the cluster of symptoms many police officers suffer as a direct result of the job of policing. In diagnosing trauma-related disorders…
According to the DSM-5 trauma is defined as “exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violation” (APA, 2013). The exposure must be as a result of either: direct experience the traumatic event, observed the traumatic event personally, learnt of a traumatic event that happened to a close family member or close friend, or experiences first-hand repeated or extreme exposure of traumatic event (not through pictures, media, television, or movies) (APA, 2013). More so, in treating trauma and any disorder as a result of traumatic events there are so many interventions that have been proposed in treatment. Nonetheless, Cloitre, Cohen, and Koenen (2006) in their book titled Treating survivors of childhood abuse: Psychotherapy…
Ptsd was first recognized by the medical community by war veterans. Ptsd is common. It was stated in, (Adaa.org)," 67% of people who experienced some form of violence has Ptsd. The rate is higher than any other form of traumatic events." Americans age 18 or older will experience Ptsd at some part in their lives.(Adaa.org). This is a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a tramatic event; where physical harm occured or the person was threatend. This condition causes fear, helplessness in people who suffer from Ptsd. Families of victims can also develop Ptsd. This…
Traumas are frightening, often dangerous, and/or violent events or conditions that are experienced as overwhelming to a family and/or any or all its individual members. These experiences can include breaches in the protective shield or social contract that diminish a family’s sense of safety and support. Each member of the family may experience trauma differently but each individual family member’s adaptation is linked to the reactions and responses of the others.…
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has many symptoms and the DSM IV-TR tells us that there is a criterion that must be met in order to diagnose a person with PTSD. There are people from all walks of life that struggle with this disorder but there is hope in treatment.…
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or what doctors call PTSD, is a serious mental illness becoming increasingly serious in our community. PTSD is a mental disorder that develops after a person encounters extreme physical harm or close to damaging harm. Another cause of PTSD is men being deployed into war and experiencing extreme trauma that many Americans go a whole lifetime with out seeing. Post- traumatic stress disorder can be treated but even though there are millions suffering it cannot yet be cured. The treatment lies within the individual when he or she learns to overcome it on his or her own, since the illness lies within our mind. It can be done but it takes great realization and determination…
Judith Herman, offers an effective model for treatment of those exposed to trauma and is often used as a foundation for many interventions. Unlike other models for trauma recovery, such as the Self-Trauma Model (Briere, 2002), Constructivist Self-Development Theory (CSDT) (Saakvitne et al., 2000), and Survivor Therapy model (Walker, 1994), her model serves as a basis for the most necessary and basic steps that need to be taken during recovery (“Trauma Based Approach, 2015). Other models are generally made up of multiple steps that could be combined to form Herman’s three simple stages. Herman’s model is applicable to a diverse number of populations, groups, and trauma types. Other models are restricted to a specific type of trauma and/or population, such as intentional human design for women. As Herman states in her book, Trauma and Recovery (1992), the basic purpose of the first stage is the establishment of safety, the second stage is remembrance and mourning, and the final stage is reconnection with ordinary…
Psychological trauma can have an everlasting effect on a person’s life. According to Armsworth and Holaday (1993), Psychological trauma occurs when an individual is exposed to an overwhelming event that renders him or her helpless in the face of intolerable danger, anxiety, and instinctual arousal (p. 49). Anyone no matter what age, can experience a traumatic event. However, children are the ones mostly affected by a traumatic event. Trauma regardless if it is sexual abuse, physical abuse, or psychological abuse, affects a person’s life. The abuse will alter the way a person thinks, feels, and their ability to cope with the abuse. The human body responds to trauma in different ways. The traumatic experience or experiences can…
Currently I am working with clients with substance use disorders at an all men residential treatment program. I had developed my theoretical orientation from Albert Ellis’s Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Carl Roger’s Client-Centered Therapy (CCT). Combining examining faulty thinking, distinguishing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and practicing distress management skills, I have seen significant progress clients have made in recovery. The Rogerian idea of providing a warm and safe environment for client to express feelings and thoughts…

In my own definition a trauma can be described as an event that upsets the individual’s normal causing psychological, physical, and emotional harm. A trauma has different meanings to each individual however, anyone can experience a trauma. Bessel A. van der Kolk an expert in the field of traumatic stress states that, “experiencing trauma is an essential part of being human; history is written in blood” (Van der Kolk, McFlarlane, &Weisaeth, 2007). Some examples of a trauma include rape, physical abuse, violence, war, and injury. A trauma does not always require the victim to be to be the one experiencing the initial threat in fact; the victim may simply be a witness or a person offering help during the traumatic event. A DSM-IV criterion…
