Video Analysis: 6 Stumbling Blocks
Situations where two or more people from different cultures have difficulties or hesitation in taking communications, are know as the “6 Stumbling Blocks”. As I watched the three videos, I realized that in all of them, there were at least one of the “6 Stumbling Blocks”, intercepting the communications made within two people from different cultures. Since it is hard to understand what the companion is thinking about. These stumbling blocks are indeed very cruel things. It can be a thing that triggers collapse among people’s relationship. Also, I really understand the feeling of misunderstanding the other’s thoughts, as I myself have actually lived abroad, where they have completely different cultures as the ones here in Japan. Therefore, I …show more content…
His first mistake which he continues to do for the whole video is having his knees above the table. Americans sit on chairs with high tables, so the man was not used to sitting very low, which caused him to sit in a position like that. Furthermore, his elbow and only his right hand was on the table which is known as bad manners in Japan. Another thing he did wrong was that he did not pick up the plate when he was eating the noodles, and was not holding the chopsticks in a proper way. This assumption of similarity occurred because in countries such as America, people use forks and knives to eat which does not require them to hold up the plates when they are eating. But in countries like Japan, where they use chopsticks, people who were eating without picking up the plate were compared to dogs eating their food, because the Japanese used low tables. Moreover, he was told by the Japanese woman that making noises when eating noodles, was polite. Which caused him to make enormous slurping sounds, even when he was drinking sake. The last and the most impolite thing he did was sticking his chopsticks into the bowl of rice. This way of using the chopsticks is used in funerals in Japan, to mourn the dead. Thus, people with Japanese culture should never do this, since it is extremely sinister. The American man made a lot of mistakes relating to table …show more content…
He gave a bunch of Chrysanthemum flowers to a good-looking woman as a gift. However, Chrysanthemum flowers are not always given as a “good” gift in some countries. It sometimes has a meaning of sadness and a symbol for funerals. This is related to “Assumption of Similarities” and “Language Difference” from the six stumbling blocks. The man gave the flower, to show his feelings towards her, but the people there caught the meaning in the “funeral” way. This shows how the man assumed the meaning for the Chrysanthemum flower was the same worldwide, when it was not. Not only flowers, but doing something which shows politeness in one culture, can mean the opposite thing in another

After a short and brief anchor introduction WGN’s, Erik Runge, tells his story on the upcoming bad allergy season through a donut live shot. In his introduction live shot, Runge stumbles a bit, but then quickly recovers from it by restating the word and pretending like it never happened. Runge’s b-roll video that was shot in the same perimeter just through different angles around the same lake area in Lincoln Park was lacking and did not compliment the story well at all. Some close up b-roll on growing plants was more effective than the other videos because it represented pollen, a main cause of allergies. Runge also only followed around one allergy victim who did not have many powerful things to say beyond the obvious negative comments on…

When building many of the castles in the 1300-1400’s the main purpose was to keep the enemies out and of course for conquest. In the video I watched, the Forbidden Knowledge video, they called out some very key point of why and how these fortresses and castles where erected and defended. Not only where there kings of the lands, but then each of those lands were divided up to noble kin and lords. They were always trying to better there futures with more land, even if that included killing your own cousin to get his piece of land. One great example of an intuitive fortress, Caesar had made a donut shaped fortress at one point around a small town; he shut out and was starving the people in the town and then also keeping out the men that were…

Culture can also affect communication in many ways. One person can be part of many different cultures. Beliefs and experiences within groups of diverse cultures will change the way a speaker must attempt to get points across to listeners. In each culture, words and action may all be interpreted differently. Miscommunications are something that nobody wants to experience during any type of communicating. A sender’s words cannot communicate the desired meaning if the receiver has not had some experience with the objects or concepts the words describe. This is what could happen if proper steps are not taken into consideration before speaking to diverse crowds.…

The Sarah Bartmaan video today had some very shocking mistreatment of African Americans. I don’t understand how Europeans could justify their actions of treating another human being like that. Also to know that people still went to see her pickled remains for almost a century after her death showed that it was more than one person that contributed to this. People thought that African Americans were a different species and weren’t even human. We can also see this in our society today. I grew up outside the Bronx, and my school was mainly comprised of African American and Hispanic people. My cousins that lived just outside the city in the suburbs, went schools were the population was 90% white. It is almost like our races still keep us separate…

When a peddler drives up to her gate, she is intrigued by the peddler's lifestyle. She talks to him and he mentions chrysanthemums, and she eagerly gives him a few chrysanthemums in a bright new pot. After seeing the video I believe that one of the solutions sort of works, Dualism simply because I went to a catholic school and raised to be religious. I was always taught believe that if someone or myself does something “evil” that we let the devil affect our judgment or listen to the devil to do something wrong such as fight with siblings, steal or cheating. Although, some believe there are issues with this solution because if god has great power, knowledge and all good intentions, then why doesn’t he stop all evil/ devil. I think god uses evil as a scare tactic, represented as a figure to attempt keep individuals from doing something evil and staying on the right and good path that God would want us to follow. Overall keeping individuals…

Florence + The Machine's music video Never Let Me Go is a story of death and leaving love behind. This is represented countless times throughout the video in various ways, both visually and lyrically. The theme of having to let go and leave someone/something you love behind runs continually throughout the video, clearly evident with the subject’s reluctance to let the darkness consume her. However, the shadow of death hangs over her during the film, threatening to take her at any given moment. The constant depiction of water brings an ethereal feeling to the video, as does the dark lighting and general setting. Lyrically, this song draws inspiration from the suicide of famous writer Virginia Woolf. Woolf took her own life by filling her pockets with stones and drowning herself in a river. Her suicide is also referenced in another Florence + The Machine song, ‘What the Water Gave Me’, which includes the lyrics ‘So lay me down/Let the only sound/Be the overflow/Pockets full of stones’. Knowing this backstory of the song gives another, unique insight to the meaning behind the video.…

Some communication barriers we may have overcome but some not. For instance, I have difficulty in understanding unfamiliar accents. Although the majority speaks English, everyone has their own accent. Even our professor in Business Environment is sometimes difficult to understand owing to his Irish accent. And I am certain that practice is the only way to deal with this problem. We should spend more time communicating with each other and eventually we won’t have difficulties in understanding one another. Yet another barrier we may face while communicating is cultural differences. We all come from different countries with different histories,…
