INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PERSPECTIVES
Cirque De Soleil was founded in the early 1980’s by Guy Laliberte, in a small village Baie-Saint-Paul east of Quebec City, Canada. The early act was nothing more than stilt walkers, fire breathing, juggling, and the theatrical dance. In 1984 Cirque De Soleil founder Guy Laliberte convinced the organizers of Quebec City’s 450th anniversary celebration to allow his act to headline the event, and they haven’t looked back since. They had their first show in the Americas at the 1987 Los Angeles art festival, where without success they wouldn’t have the money for gas to move the show back to Canada. As the video states they didn’t have that problem, the show went on without a hitch and was very successful. After touring the world with successful shows in 217 cities on every continent but Antarctica, in 1998 they would find their home at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, where they perform a show every night of the week. The issue at hand with Cirque De Soleil, is finding proper talent. The video states that it recruits worldwide, but has areas of interest for certain talents. For example the company looks to Mongolia for contortionist, because at a very young age they began to learn this talent. The people they look for must have a natural talent that cannot be taught, but the issue arises if they are easily trained in the theatrical aspects of the show. Someone may have a natural talent that the show is looking for, but may not be easily trained, and to keep cost low the company has to pass on these recruits. The show also looks to recruit Olympic athletes, however this cause an issue on its own. Out of respect to the country in which the athletes are recruited, the company makes sure that it’s the athlete’s last Olympic games, because the country puts a lot of money and effort training them. The company also uses a 1.5 million gallon pool during its shows and must staff
