Vinewood Junior High: A Short Story
“Why did we have to move?!” I exclaimed as my mom and I waited for the bus to my new school to pick us up at the bus stop parking spots.

“It’s much cheaper to live here than Long Island,” my mom said calmly “Plus my new job here is higher paying than back in New York” she said again.

Just then the big bright yellow bus pulled up to a stop “Bye” my mom said as I cut her off by slamming the door shut and running over to the bus and stepping on I realized I was the only black kid there. But I also realized how chaotic the bus was.

As I made the last step the bus got silent because of the bus driver declaring loudly “This is Michael,Lets welcome him to Vinewood Junior High”

I sighed and walked down the walkway with gruesome smirks and stares and people refusing to let me sit with

He a blue coat on and a black pair of sweatpants and he sat down with a thud on a chair next to a desk with random papers on them. He had us line up and he got up and asked us our names and what positions we played and we all lined up in order of positions. Then the coach told the pitchers and catchers to come up towards him but stay in line.

He told the catchers to find a pitcher (Which we did) I probably haven’t mentioned this but i’m a pitcher and a pretty good one at that. Anyway we lined up and threw the ordered pitches.First curveballs, sliders, fastballs, and then my weakness the all elusive circle change up.

I wound up ready to watch as my chance on the team would soon slip away. I threw it and amazingly it was perfect the coach even applauded my “Performance” and announced very loudly “Here’s my starter” I was elated once the drills were done we went inside and hit a few baseballs of the coach into a net in the gym.

I had made the team first practice was next monday and we had a two weeks until our first game. The rest of the month was a blur of boredom in class and baseball and a few new friends who also made the team. Ben and Kyle made the team

These past few years at Lionville Middle School have been some of the most memorable and exciting parts of my life. I came to Lionville Middle School from Shamona Creek Elementary. Shamona Creek elementary was much smaller than the gargantuan, new middle school. Also, there were so many more students and teachers. I expected the middle school to be filled to the brim with classrooms and I was correct. Some of my first memories here are quietly coming into the school and looking for my classroom. I did not even know where to go or how to get there. All around I saw kids getting to their classes right away, while I was stuck in the hallways. Fortunately, I saw a friend and followed him toward my new classroom. When I got my new locker, I had…

I had struck out most of the up-bats before that (I wasn’t necessarily the best baseball player back then). However, I was completely ready for the ball to come at me. I grasped the handle of the cold, hard bat tightly. The ball flew right over the home plate, and I hit it with all the power I had left in my body. The ball went soaring, looking like a white bird migrating south. The ball landed unquestionably far into right field, and as soon as it did, I started to sprint to first base. I decided that it would be safe to round to second base. I had already been past second base when the player playing right field got to the ball. I made it to third base, wondering if I could sprint home. I decided to wait, but I clearly could have ran to home plate. It took a while to process what had just happened. I had just hit a two-run RBI triple! I hadn’t even noticed the two runners on base come home, since I was really in the moment. Our team got through the inning, and it was my turn to pitch. This was only the second time that I had ever pitched while playing baseball! I ran out to the mound, and I started to warm up with the catcher. I rolled the hard, slightly dirty ball in my fingertips. “You can do this, Nathan,” I thought to myself nervously. “The whole team is relying on you.” After a bit of time, I was able to strike out two players and get a groundout to end the…

As soon as I walked through the front doors of Anderson High School, I knew my feelings and thoughts would fly around all over the place. It was almost like my stomach was turned completely inside out and all I could do was stare as people of all kind wandered to their first class. I did not know where to begin looking; I had just been here five days ago but my mind went blank as soon as I stepped foot inside. Eventually the school bell made a noise almost similar to something you might hear in a prison, alarmingly I about jumped out of my seat. Luckily I was not the only person who was caught off guard by this disturbing buzz. In came a man whose name I still can not pronounce to this day; he greeted us and my mouth almost dropped to…

I held my breath to avoid the harsh taste that lodges deep into my lungs from the bus exhaustion. I walked onto the cold mustard colored bus and saw my friend Anna sitting on the rough piece of plastic they call a seat. She sat arms crossed shivering to the negative two degree wind chill, the only thing keeping her warm was a red ball of yarn that rested on top of a black woven beanie. I waved hello and sat adjacent to her to avert the temptation of…

When I reached the bus station, it was nearly empty except for a handful of boys. Mohan and I strode to a bench near the stationmaster’s office. I could feel the tension on my shoulders as the straps of my school bag ate into my shoulder. “Where is the bus?” I sighed to myself. An elderly woman came and asked me where I was going. She started a conversation but gave up after my monosyllable answers.…

Getting off the bus after 15 minutes of riding to the school, fear started taking over. I was walking following other students and seeing all these different faces I had never seen before in my life. “Good Morning Piscataway Vo – tech High School. I am Mr. Patrick, the school principal. Welcome to your first day of high school; all students must be at their homeroom for important information they will get! Have a nice day everyone.” I panicked and that’s when I really started to feel uncomfortable, I wanted to cry. “Oh My God!” what am I going to do now? I don’t know which homeroom I have to go to!” – I said to myself with a soft voice. As I stood on a corner like a homeless person, I saw everyone with their friends all happy and excited walking comfortably calmly to their homeroom. --- Why I didn’t ask for help?…
