Question One:
Examine the two photographs and answer the following question. Identify and examine the differences in the photographs. Consider purpose, composition, lighting, subject matter, setting, and meaning conveyed.
The Cleaner, 1987
The Cleaner by Anne Zalhalka is an original photograph of a young woman cleaner in her late 20’s, resting while daydreaming through a window after cleaning seems not to be hers but for an upper class. The house seems ancient as the furniture and curtains seem to be “old fashioned’ and the Photograph on the wall seems to be from a historical background. The plate of an un-finished fruit presumably a kiwi fruit, and a peeled orange falling from the table drapes gives us the impression that someone had been eating and had not bothered cleaning after him or herself due to the noticeable detail that there is no eating cutlery on the table to imply that she had been eating. Also the cleaning bucket with a cleaning rags states that she had been cleaning. Also, we can tell that she had been listening to some sort of Audio, i.e. Radio or music, due to the cascade in her pocket and the headphones draped around her neck. Another detail we can draw from the photograph is that the lighting is natural coming from a window in which she is gazing from.
The icebergs, 1989
The icebergs was a photograph taken in 1989 of a group of former Bondi lifeguards posing for a reunion formal photo with a beach theme to symbolise their lifeguard memory, this is apparent for the reason that all six men are dressed in beach clothing. However, the backdrop of the ocean and a ship cruising by the edge of the backdrop proves to be set up as if to be at the beach.
