Vitamin D Levels and Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis is an auto-immune deficient disease with no known cure to date. Multiple Sclerosis is damage done to the fatty sheath, myelin, which insulates the nerve fibers in the brain. Multiple Sclerosis symptoms or flare-ups, as they are often referred, may include seizures, double vision, numbness, muscle control, difficulty with speech and ability to think clearly. Scientists have discovered a correlation of Vitamin D amounts with the ability to limit flare ups pertaining to Multiple Sclerosis.
In 2002, researchers were studying the effects of the drug beta-interferon-1b against Multiple Sclerosis and set aside blood samples of 465 patients. An analysis of these blood samples was conducted, providing the results those patients with higher levels of Vitamin D at the six and twelve month intervals had fewer flare-ups during the duration of the five year study. (Seppa, 2014).
Long term data collection by the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, demonstrated an increase of seizure activity in Multiple Sclerosis as a whole. Partial and complex seizures occur in Multiple Sclerosis, with seizures occasionally being the first flare-up of Multiple Sclerosis to occur. Most studies find no evidence between seizures and severity or duration of Multiple Sclerosis. Seizures have been thought to be the result of demyelinating lesions found in Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. The role of Vitamin D3, in the cause and symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis has known significant impact on broader Multiple Sclerosis presentations. (Anderson, Rodriquez, 2011).
Valproate is a medication often prescribed as an antiepileptic. This medication acts as a chaperone with Vitamin D3 increasing the power that Vitamin D3 offers Multiple Sclerosis patients. Vitamin D3 also inhibits effects on blood pressure
