For this assignment I am going to explain what Multiple Sclerosis and Vascular Dementia is as well as identify their signs and symptoms. Additionally I will be describing investigations that are carried out in order to diagnose these physiological disorders and identify any difficulties involved in the diagnosis.
P1) Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a neurological condition, affects around 100,000 people in the UK and is most common is people aged 20-40 years old. MS affects the nerves in your brain and spinal cord causing problems with muscle control, vision and balance, sometimes even your memory, as well as your moods and emotions. It is when your immune system mistakes myelin (the coating around nerve fibres) as a foreign body therefore begins to attack it. However, myelin is a fatty substance that protects nerve fibres in the central nervous system, helping to send messages quickly and smoothly between the brain and the rest of the body. Lifestyle can also increase an individual’s risk of developing the disorder, for example having a poor diet as this can lead to high blood pressure or heart disease, additionally having too much saturated fat can cause narrowing of the arteries, increasing the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke which could lead to developing vascular dementia. It is also important to exercise in order to raise the heart beat to ensure your blood is flowing as it should, minimising risks of developing blood clots. Other lifestyle events that can encourage an individual to develop the disorder includes smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, having high cholesterol as well as having heart
