Vitruvian Man
This image exemplifies the blend of art and science during the Renaissance and provides the perfect example of Leonardo's keen interest in proportion. In addition, this picture represents a cornerstone of Leonardo's attempts to relate man to nature. Encyclopaedia Britannica online states, "Leonardo envisaged the great picture chart of the human body he had produced through his anatomical drawings and Vitruvian Man as a cosmografia del minor mondo (cosmography of the microcosm). He believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe."
According to Leonardo's preview in the accompanying text, written in mirror writing, it was made as a study of the proportions of the (male) human body as described in Vitruvius. The text is in two parts, above[a] and below[b] the image.
The first paragraph of the upper part reports Vitruvius: "Vetruvio, architect, puts in his work on architecture that the measurements of man are in nature distributed in this manner, that is: a palm is four fingers a foot is four palms a cubit is six palms four cubits make a man a pace is four cubits a man is 24 palms and these measurements are in his buildings". The second paragraph reads: "if you open your legs enough that your head is lowered by one-fourteenth of your height and raise your hands enough that your extended fingers touch the line of the top of your head, know that the centre of the extended limbs will be the navel, and the space between the legs will be an equilateral triangle".
The lower section of text gives these proportions: the length of the outspread arms is equal to the height of a man from the hairline to the bottom of the chin is one-tenth of the height of a man from below the chin to the top of the head is one-eighth of the height of a man from above the chest to the top of the head is one-sixth of the height of a man from above the chest to the hairline is one-seventh of the height of a man. the maximum width of the

This problem was solved by making a proportion of her to nose to my nose and ‘x' over the length of my leg. X being the Statue of Liberty's leg. Or there was another proportion that would work just as well. Liberty's nose over her leg (x) and my nose over my leg. After everyone solved this assignment, all of the answers were different because people have different noses and legs. This assignment taught us all how to set up proportions and solve for unknowns, of course this was something that we used a lot afterwards and used to solve for the final…

Leonardo da Vinci was naturally curious about how things worked. He examined plants humans and animals he drew them and coupled them with notes of his findings. He created a universal system of proportion in reference to humans. Leonardo da Vinci was one of those special humans that come along once in a lifetime. He was a scientist and an artist. Combining the two talents was a match made in heaven. I responded to the piece because Leonardo da Vinci is such a great icon during the fifteenth century. His artwork is still famous to this day, The Mona Lisa is one of many that can recognized immediately by anyone. Leonardo's curiosity and hunger to dissect the world one kingdom at a time is what interests me. Not only his curiosity but his inventiveness. His notes included contraptions that looked like they were made for the skies. Which just goes to show that even then humans realized that when you want something the sky is the…

Described as "young giant" who is "six feet three inches" tall, McTeague seems to have a feeling of superiority because the narrator hints that he is a ver simple man with low ambitions. Using imagery and metaphors, the narrator shows how masculine and strong McTeague is but also shows that he lack intelligence. "Immense", "muscle", "enormous", hard", and "angular" are words the author used to describe McTeague's physical attributes. Through the first half of the passage, the author was focused more on his appearance and look than his personality. This shows McTeague is a person in vain, who is judge by his looks or on how his looks reflect who he is.…

After viewing some background information on the yowie (a short video and newspaper article), we were given the foot length of the yowie (43cm) and asked to find its height from this measurement. We were asked to collect a series of measurements of our body proportions. After some discussion about not getting precise enough approximation for some body proportions, specifically the a/b/c finger, we decided to only include foot length, height and arm span as we thought that this was the essence of the our initial question. Based on our initial foot measurements we agreed that for our estimation of the yowie’s height we would double Tamara’s height as her foot measurement doubled was the closet to the yowie’s (157x2=314) making our height estimate to be 314cm. Our body proportion can be seen in table 1.…

Over the years, many researchers have tried to make a connection between some of society’s most respected people. The link they agreed upon was their height. The result raised a lot of controversy. Tall people refused to admit that it was their height that gave them a boost up the career chart, and shorter ones refused to accept that they would need to work twice as much to get the same results. Researchers not only claimed that tall people were happier in life, but also the fact that those who were successful were actually statistically above average height. After these reports surfaced, many who believed that an extra inch could give them an edge turned to risky, illegal height-increasing surgeries for help. In this paper, I will give you an insight on the claims, as well as observations on this controversial topic and the research behind it.…
