Vox On Sexism
Studies, like the one done by Vox, demonstrates one of the various ways in which sexism continues to be an issue. During this study, Martin Schneider worked with Nicole Hallberg editing resumes. They shared an email that allowed for separate inboxes to sign their individual signatures. One day, while Mr. Schneider was at work he couldn’t understand why a formerly cooperative client was being notably stubborn. Within a few hours, Mr. Schneider noticed that he had accidentally clicked on Mrs. Hallbergs’ file and had been signing emails with her signature. Shocked by that client’s reaction he purposed a social experiment to switch names for two weeks and record the results. He still currently describes this as one of the most frustrating experiences

Today, women have just as many rights as anyone else does and hold prominent positions in companies, whereas this would be unheard of in the Progressive Era. Women enjoy the simple freedoms of being allowed to strive for any job of their choosing, have free speech, and do not have to rely on a man to support them. While women do have rights that equal men, there is still a blaring issue in today’s times: the wage gap. The wage gap is exactly what it sounds like, a major difference in how much women are paid as compared to men. Women have come so far from the dark days of being treated awfully and thrust into dangerous occupations, but even in the modern world, sexism in the workplace is still apparent if you look for it. It is not out in the open as much as it once was, but statistics show that women are payed noticeably less than men in the same position are. This is quite honestly pitiful. Women have fought too hard and for too long for a wage gap keeping women from full equality in the work place. I believe that the wage gap is not a thing that can be changed in a matter of months by a law to be passed, I think that people are in desperate need of relinquishing all sexist viewpoints that they may have. This is easier said than done, but in an ideal world, all people, no matter the gender, race, or sexual orientation will…

In the article “Clinton, Trump, and Sexism” by New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof, the author makes the argument that feminism is becoming more acceptable while sexism is a fading characteristic of our modern day society. Kristof proves his claim through the scope of politics by analyzing the Democratic and Republican candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. In addition, the author states that early in her career Clinton was criticized for having feminist ideals that were often opposed in the late twentieth century. Nextly, Kristof comments that Hillary Clinton is no stranger to criticism as she has endured ongoing verbal attacks even continuing into her candidacy of 2008 and now of 2016. Although she is still commonly chastised for…

Although gender discrimination is hidden with the other social norms, it is present and has a great impact on the daily lives of both men and women. Sexism has a similar effect on society like bacteria; while it may be beneficial for some, it can be harmful to others. This concept is what creates the significant gap between genders, while giving the impression that one gender, generally the male, is superior to the other. Sexism has made its way into a part of daily life; it is simply inevitable for the general population to follow the typical roles, established since the beginnings of the development of humanity. The basic foundations of the roles of men and women are heavily influenced by sexism; therefore, gender discrimination is clearly…

Another subtle way in which sexism exists isn’t even committed by men—women are taking part in a cycle of misogyny and hatred of the members of their own gender. Very commonly nowadays you see young girls and even grown women claim to be different from their female peers in order to seem more appealing to men. It’s a very simple self-perpetuating way for misogyny to exist without ever being perpetrated by males. With the “not-like-other-girls” mindset, women are pitted against other women, as opposed to standing in solidarity against the very institutional sexism they have been unknowingly perpetuating. Girl-on-girl hate has been sensationalized and normalize in the media via television shows (see Gossip Girl), movies (see Mean Girls), and books (see The Clique series) all of these are specifically targeted for young girls. Often the antagonists of these stories are female peers and the happy ending or “reward” is finally getting to be with which ever boy that has been lusted over for the length of the story. While they do highlight the very real issue of bullying in schools, these stories do little to nothing to promote the friendship and commonality that young girls have together. In relation to the aforementioned grievance, self-image doesn’t have to be limited to one’s personality or appearance—it can refer to one’s gender, and can lead to the dislike of members of one’s own…

In day to day life, people judge and make biases with every person they meet. It can be on the way someone walks, the way they speak, or just how they carry themselves. Anything and everything that is seen is up for grabs. That's the way people have been for decades. But the most prominent is between genders. For years, men have had advantages women were simply denied. In the early 1900’s women were treated incredibly unfairly to today’s standards. For instance, they couldn’t vote, one of the most basic rights in this country. Also, they weren’t as educated as men during this time so as to stay at home and be a stay-at-home wife. Women also had hard times finding decent jobs, as most of them were hired in factories or as servants in houses. It took half a century for a change in their outlook as they became able to have birth control in the 1960s. This allowed them to be able to become more educated since they didn't have to focus on a family, helped them get jobs, and become part of the workforce. Women even gained the right to vote. This may seem like there's not much else to fix, but it is still a part of our daily lives and still needs plenty of work before we can ever consider being anywhere near close to equality.…

Sexism against women- Sexism still pervades in our society. A clear example of this is the way Hillary Clinton was treated in the elections. Hillary faced many gender-based abuse by the media and many individuals. “Multiple studies on women in national security have shown concerns about the progression of women into senior leadership positions (Erbe, 2008).” Some feel women are inferior to men, this is clearly a form of sexism. Statistics from U.S. Bureau of Justice indicates that women are much more likely than men to experience “nonfatal intimate partner violence”. 30% of female homicide victims are estimated to have been killed by intimate partners in comparison to 5% male homicide victims. In the past, women were not included in higher education. When women were included in higher education , they were encouraged into majors that were less intellectual. Women have been excluded from participating in many professions. Based on a 2009 study conducted by Cornell University on the topic of CEOs, research suggests that while being obese limit’s the career opportunities of both women and men, being a bit overweight harms only female executives and may actually benefit male executives. There’s also a disparity of wages between men and women. Today, women earn 75% of the income of men. Research conducted suggest that mothers are 44% less likely to be…

Some say a woman should be happy to have a partner, regardless of how they treat her. Others make gender-based statements on what women can and can’t do. The fact that some people dislike female presidential candidates merely based on the gender is an current example of the adversity women face in “men’s jobs” still face. I’ve heard a multitude ignorant comments spewed from many about how a woman’s privileges and roles can’t be equal to that of a man’s, and is that really any different than Tom’s cruel comments about his opinion of women in the…

The gender ‘female’ goes through a lot of gender bias issues as men are favored in a lot of place, especially in the work field. Men and women are paid differently at the same level and status of work in an organization, which means that the income of a woman is less than that of a man. Not just this but also the way women are treated in the office or whatever their work place is. They lack opportunities, trust and most importantly the due respect. However, they are put to work much more than men.…

One of the biggest problems today’s society has is change. Society fears the oncoming storm of liberal ideas as well as the ever changing mass of people who aren’t afraid to speak up about topics like “gender”, which is arguably as broad and debatable as they come. The amount of people educated in this topic, however, is not so extensive. Many people only have knowledge of what a man and woman should be based on their society’s rules. Others understand and accept that “gender only exists as a comparative quality” and choose to not divide “certain types of behaviors … as masculine or feminine” (Scantlebury). The problem of gender stereotyping and normalization has become more recognized over the…

Women have experienced a historic situation of inequality in the social as well as professional aspects. Women are normally the ones that would take care of the children, do the household chores, and in rural areas; they would work in the field with the rest of the family. Just like how the Breaking Barriers article states, “from an early age, girls are dressed in pink boys in blue. Boys are given trucks to play with while girls are offered dolls [..] girls are assigned household duties like washing the dishes and doing laundry, while boys are relegated to mowing the lawn and talking out the trash” (18). Gender inequality in the workplace is becoming less common; yet, gender is a factor that affects both men and women. Also, in Breaking Barriers article it says how “females and males often choose career paths that are traditional for their gender” (18). Females are usually seen in jobs such as nursing or paralegals. Males are typically doing jobs that have to do with welding, carpentry, or engineering. Women could have the same capabilities and maybe even higher qualifications than a men going for the same position, but because of gender inequality the male is more likely to get the job then the female. Men and women should be offered the same job opportunities no matter what gender they are; it should be based on their ability to complete the…
