Walmart As A Social Norm Essay
A social norm is the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society. People who go against the social norm may be shunned or looked at as a bad person. For my social norm breaching experiment, I decided to dress up as a hospital patient that had just been released from the hospital and walk around Wal-Mart. My mom is a registered nurse at the Baptist Memorial Hospital, so she was able to get me the materials that I needed to conduct the experiment. I decided to do this at Wal-Mart, because of the people that go in there. However, I didn’t conduct this experiment at the Wal-Mart in my hometown. I knew that less people would catch on to the operation if they didn’t recognize me. There is always a variety of people in every Wal-Mart across America, so I speculated that I would get a lot of responses and/or emotions from several different people that didn’t know me personally. I only …show more content…
It’s not normal for a person dressed up in a hospital gown and funny looking socks to be looking at medicine in the middle of Wal-Mart. By the way that people responded to my social norm breach, I’ve concluded that people thought it was weird and that it was definitely an odd thing for them to have seen in a popular store. I also think that people don’t know how to react in a different situation that they have never experienced before. I think this, because most of them would just stare at me clueless and stay silent. I also believe that social media plays a major role in social norms. Social media takes on its own voice in every aspect of life. If someone is breaking the social norm, they are automatically strange people and can be targeted for it. If I would’ve experienced the same thing that the people in Wal-Mart did, I wouldn’t have known what to do, only because I’ve never seen it

As the largest retailer in America, Walmart has been called “one of the most impactful organizations in the history of humanity” (Roberts 1); however, we must ask ourselves what type of impact Walmart is making. Because they are such a large corporation, Walmart has the power and ability to greatly influence our society either for the good or for the bad, and most people agree that their impression on our current society is a negative one. There is lots of controversy over the ethical and economic repercussions our country faces because of Walmart. Also, in choosing the social norm you plan to violate, do not do anything potentially harmful to yourself or to anyone else. Ever since its existence, much controversy and debate have surrounded the benefits and downfalls of the Wal Mart corporation within society. The purpose of this précis is to summarize the article “Wal-Mart and Country-Wide Poverty” by Stephen J. Gotez and Hema Swaminathan. “Wal Mart” is the most successful “Big box” retailer in the world with 4750 stores worldwide and 3,600 in the United States. Much of its success arises from the fact that it offers lower prices to consumers. At face value this is a good thing because it makes consumer goods more easy to purchase, therefore encouraging people to spend money and stimulate the economy. This has been proven to reduce annual inflation rates, lower the absolute…

Everyone loves Walmart, its cheap, it has just about anything anyone could need, and its very popular. However the super store is taking a huge toll on small business owners by running them into financial problems and damaging the local economy. “Wal-Mart store openings kill three local jobs for every two they create by reducing retail employment by an average of 2.7 percent in every county they enter.” (Popularresistance.org) Taking that into mind really shows what Walmart is doing to damage the economy but what they do to small business owners. After Walmart opened stores in Chicago, a quarter of the small businesses around the store closed due to financial woes. Having the store in small communities is terrible…

America is based on the principles and ideals of freedom. The citizens are free to speak out, congregate peacefully, to choose their religion, among many others. In the economic realm, both citizens and businesses alike have access to a free market. A free market economy, or Capitalism, is an economic system which is controlled strictly by fluctuations in supply and demand. This lack of authoritative regulation can be seen in several different lights. Those proponents of Capitalism claim that it gives equal opportunity to all entities. Those who oppose it claim the antitheses to be true. Occasionally entities, usually larger corporations, will become so large and powerful that they begin to deplete their competition both across the board and down the rungs of the corporate ladder. The most powerful businesses have begun to choke out smaller businesses simply because of their vast reservoirs of resources. A lack of variation in size, regional differences, level of influence, quality, and capital fortitude of businesses has proven detrimental to economic stability time and time again. It is true that Capitalism was created to give everyone a fair advantage, however, the influence of several factors including aggressive shareholders and the voracity of human nature cause the importance of ethics in the business world to diminish almost completely to powerful executives. Bradley Googins, executive director of the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College, explains what it means to be a good citizen in the corporate world, "Good Corporate Citizenship is fiscal transparency, the demonstration of a corporate social conscience, and evidence that corporate values are more than just pretty words on a framed plaque" (qtd. in. Corporate Social Responsibility). As hundreds of billions of dollars are gained at the expense of ethical crimes, it becomes increasingly obvious that these tycoons put the weight of their bottom line before everything else.…

After this experiment, I founded that, when people are put out of there norms, they become very uncomfortable, and uneasy. Both of the participants claimed they thought I was strange to stand close to them and it made them very uncomfortable. I don’t think most people think about these norms but only unit they are broken or violated. I don’t many people realize how important norms are and how much of an impact they can make on a society. In this specific norm, I believe it is important because it is respecting the individual by not violating his or hers personal space. It is a sign of respect and acknowledgement. Social norms are important because they can bring a society together by following these norms. People know what is right and…

Wal-Mart comes into communities to help build them up and add jobs. It succeeds in both things, but leaves much to be desired in the ways of treating their employees, which makes Wal-Mart is both an asset and a detriment to communities. While Wal-Mart contributes to the community by providing a place to purchase goods cheaply and obtain jobs that do not require much experience, they mar this goodwill through compassion-less practices such as cutting of employee's health insurance and pushing out "mom and pop" stores.…

The social norm that I chose to violate was to go into an elevator and instead of turning around and facing the door upon entering; I had my back to the door and faced the other people in the elevator. In normality a person enters an elevator, pushes the button for their desired floor and turns to face the door to avoid eye contact with strangers, and prepare to exit the elevator. The reason I choose to violate this particular social norm was because I’ve never seen anyone else do it and I was curious as to what would happen.…
