Yes, I do believe Wal-Mart is doing enough to become more sustainable. Wal-Mart is one of the most powerful companies internationally. As with all things that come with power, Wal-Mart’s business practices are scrutinized thoroughly. This includes their relationships with suppliers, employees, consumers, and the environment. In recent years, the environment has become such a big issue that Wal-Mart, as well as other companies have had to respond to this growing concern.
Part of the reason Wal-Mart has not only stayed around but has continued to grow over the years has been its ability to adapt to change in times. This ability has helped them with their environmental practices. In 2005, Wal-Mart was targeted as a violator of safe environmental practices. They were subpoenaed by the US Attorney's office in California due to concerns of their recycling, treatment and storage of hazardous material, and their transportation practices. Because of the ongoing concern over the environment and the criticism about their response to it Wal-Mart implemented procedures to increase their sustainability.
Wal-Mart is currently improving on four main areas of environmental concern: Waste improvement and recycling, natural resources, energy, and social/community impact. They already have opened up two stores that get their electricity from solar panels and wind turbines. Wal-Mart intends to apply these new ways of getting energy to their other stores. They also regulate electricity usage in their stores based on a daylight dimming system. They adjust the input of electricity in lighting based on the natural light. They also are making efforts to regulate their heating and cooling system. Another way that they are trying to help the environment is through their transportation system. They have now implemented two different types of hybrid trucks and two alternatively fueled heavy-duty trucks into
