Walt Kowalski In Eastwood's Gran Torino
The movie Gran Torino is a movie I enjoy watching. The director is Clint Eastwood and released on December 9, 2008. The main character in this movie and the ending is what makes this movie good. I did not like the movie because the Hmong people were being stereotyped.

Walt Kowalski is my favorite character. Walt is initially portrayed as a narrow-minded, racist, and hateful towards the Hmong people living in his neighborhood. He does not want to associate with the Hmong people. Later, in the movie he starts to change his mind about the Hmong people. I like Walt because he will state the truth straight to your face. He is not afraid to say anything that might hurt someone’s feelings and I admire that.

Walt is brutally honest when it comes to scenarios. He has a different sense of humor compared to others. Walt starts to be a positive role model towards Thao. He showed Thao how to act like a man. He gets him to work across the street and fix up the house for a week. Walt gets Thao a construction job and teaches him how to speak to others. He told him not to be afraid to speak up for himself. I like Walt because he was not afraid to stand up for others and he demonstrates that at the end of the movie.

Walt’s death symbolized change for Thao and Sue. I liked the ending because it showed that Walt cared about the Hmong people after all. The Hmong gang came and attacked Thao and Sue. Walt felt the need to step in and take a stand. He carefully thought of a plan in action. He knew the gang would go to jail for shooting at him. He died to protect Sue and

As Laurell K. Hamilton, a famous American fantasy writer, once said, “There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” This quote directly applies to the little-dark-puppy-kicked-too-many-times character named Johnny Cade from S.E. Hinton’s timeless novel The Outsiders, who has both mental and physical scars from his horrific beating at the hands of the Socs -which not only linger upon his skin, but also penetrate his heart. In chapter two of this engaging and teen-centered novel, we dig deeper into the past of Johnny Cade’s life, thanks in part to a captivating first-person flashback from Johnny’s fellow Greaser, Ponyboy Curtis. While Ponyboy and his fresh friend Cherry Valance, a Soc…

The Hmong cultural group is always targeted as the racial discrimination especially by the white people of the America. The same concept is shown in the film Gran Torino where the white American Walt who is actually an overt racism personality makes fun of the people that are belonging to other race and his main focus is always his neighborhood Hmong family. The family shown in the film that belong to Hmong culture are shown as very scared one and that are not even independent and beside the rude behavior of Walt they ask for his intervention in their every decision. The cultural group of Hmong race in the film revolves around certain…

The areas densely populated with families tended to watch more family friendly films like the Curious Case of Benjamin Button rather than Gran Torino. Notably, the areas that had a lower population of Asians was typically the same area that did not have as many views of the film. The reasoning behind Gran Torino being popular with the Asian community is most likely connected to the overall storyline of the white lead actor putting aside his Asian prejudices and befriending his Asian neighbors. This connects to the Asian community on a number of levels because of discrimination during the Gold Rush, World War II, and the Korean War. The hope of a future where the prejudices against the Asian community does not…

Johnny Cade, the sympathetic and lovable character from the classical realistic fiction novel “The Outsides” by renowned author S.E. Hinton is one of the most complex and confusing characters in the novel. Johnny is a very special character because he is so different in so many ways to the other protagonists in this novel. He himself who is both quiet and passive is forced to take refuge with the violent and active gang of the greasers by his abusive family. Throughout the novel he is the main catalysis of most of the major events in the novel, through his small acts of courage, he leads both himself and Ponyboy into a whirlwind of adventure including murder, death and heroism making him one of the most loved character of the novel. One of the…

The first dominant trait I noticed in Walter is how industrious he is. For example, in the movie Walter is constantly dreaming about his next big thing. For the time being, he wanted to invest in a liquor store. “I want so many things that they are driving me crazy.” he says. Being a dreamer is great. It shows me that he has goals and aspirations in life. When I was little I had a laundry list of things I wanted to do/be. It ranged from being a famous singer, to meeting Oprah, to running my own home patient care. Another example of Walter being industrious is when he says, “I feel that there are better things in life for me. I open and close doors all day long, I drive around in a limousine and say ‘Yes, Sir; No, Sir; Very Good Sir; Shall I take the drive Sir,’ I feel this ain’t no kind of job for me.” Important people all around me always tell me that if I wake up every morning and dread my job then I need to quit. Walter dreads his job, he hates going to it. He sees that there are better things than driving a limo all day. Even though he has a steady job with a steady income, he isn’t happy. He’s more than ready to move on with his life and make some like changing decisions. These examples show that one of Walter Younger’s dominant traits is that he is industrious.…

Gran Torino, focuses on the relationship between Walt Kowalski, a retired Korean War veteran who has just lost his wife, and his neighbors, who are of the Hmong culture. The story revolves around Walt, the teenage son, Thao, and daughter, Sue. The Hmong people are from Asia. This creates tension between Walt and the family because of Walts stereotypes and racism. He refers to them as “gooks” which is a derogatory slang term for Asian people, most commonly Koreans, this is something he took away from the Korean war. Walt does not see his culturally diverse neighbors as anything but “gooks” because he believes that Koreans and other Asians are all the same. There are many cultural differences between Walt and the Hmong family. They are a family rich with tradition and cultural values. Yet, they also struggle to adapt to the American…

Stanley Kubrick's cold and frightening "The Shining" challenges the mind. In the opening scene at a job interview, we meet Jack Torrance, a man who plans to live for the winter in solitude and isolation with his wife and son. He will be the caretaker of the snowbound Overlook Hotel. His employer warns that a former caretaker murdered his wife and two daughters, and committed suicide, but Jack told him: "You can rest assured, Mr. Ullman, that's not gonna happen with me. And as far as my wife is concerned, I'm sure she'll be absolutely fascinated when I tell her about it. She's a confirmed ghost story and horror film addict.”…
