Walter F. Otto's Dionysus: Myth And Cult
“”Empty fantasies” these myths certainly are not. On the contrary, they contain much more that is real than if they were reporting that which had once occurred”.1 This quote by Walter F. Otto in his book, Dionysus: Myth and Cult, though used for a specific example, articulately and briefly explains why we read myths at all. They tell us not only about the people of the time, but also about ourselves. Through myths we can learn about a culture's values, about why we choose to or not to devote our lives to a religion, and about what these things mean for society as a whole. Miraculously, through myths about people from a different place and time than us, we are able to better understand ourselves here and now. Specifically this paper will

In any event, even legends and myths have their purpose. As Joseph Campbell has taught us, myths define us and inspire us, they inhabit us deeply and explain to us who we are. They tell us something important about their subject and about ourselves. When we are children, and also when we are adults, we learn our deepest truths through myth. More than mere lies, myths…

They worshipped them at regular hours in the many shrines and temples of the city, but they also devoted a time to them in the intimacy of their own homes. Hercules, Bacchus and Venus, based on the Greek gods Heracles, Dionysus and Aphrodite, were often found in the lararium, the shrine at which the head of the household would worship his ancestors, along with members of his family and his slaves. The lararia tend to feature paintings of Hercules, the legendary founder of…

All of the ancient myths (including all three types, Shakespearean, biblical, and folk/fairy tale) can be used as correspondences for modern writers to add depth to their writings. The main point that Foster is trying to propose is that myth is a body of story that matters (as he said in bold). This means that every community owns it’s own type of myth belief system. Myths can be in different forms in literature, paintings, and music. All of these forms tell a story, even though it is difficult to notice the story it is trying to tell. The literature form of myths is used by modern writers because the situations between the myths and the modern literature writing is very much alike. These comparisons are parallels, but how the myths are used and written in the modern world are ironized. A lot of the important events in novels can be factored down to myths.…

    Dionysius Is A Tyrant

I will now briefly discuss Dionysius I, a tyrant of Syraceus during the classical period of Greek history. Aristotle, in his work Politics, wrote, ‘a tyrant is set up from among the people and the multitude to oppose the notables, in order that the people may suffer no injustice from them’ . As before with the Cypselid dynasty, we see Dionysius I come to power with the aid of the military and the demos. However despite their origins we once again during Dionysius reign see the steady decline of populous support. Dionysius I was an aristocrat and held a clerical position within the political system of Syraceus until he was elected as a general in 405B.C. Once again we see a tyrant using social unrest to gain access to power. During the Peloponnesian…

The ancient Greek gods are known for being human-like in their jealousy and anger, yet beyond human compassion, and Dionysus in Euripides' The Bacchae is no exception. Accompanied by his followers, liberated, frenzied women known as the Maenads or Bacchae, Dionysus comes to Thebes, Greece from Asia, as a new god. They are rejected by the Thebans and the god plans to retaliate.…

What if myths were real? What if I was part of a myth, and a myth was part of me? That feels so big to be part of a myth, and even bigger to allow mythology to move through me and transform me. When I first moved to Mountain View, CA over a decade ago, I took up residency on Promethean Way. When I initially moved into the home, there was a natural draw to the street, the name, the lineage, and the origin; but at the time I did not know why. According to some mythological stories, Prometheus was the titan who was cursed by Zeus for gifting man with fire. This tool would allow man to cook, to increase warmth, to see, to explore; it not only gave man the ability to survive, but also the possibility to advance, to grow, and to evolve. In turn,…

Eventually, an event would take place, and they would have to burn it all down or flood it with water. So they abandon ship and move on up, looking for a new world for all their creations to live on. These gods act as the cultural heroes in this myth. They are the cause of actions that physically shape the world people live on and they teach lessons on what is wrong and what is right. There is one component of the myth that it misses the mark on, preserving the culture or history of a people. The people are clearly not the main subject of this myth, the creation of the world and the emergence of people is. It would be fair to say that this myth is a necessary requirement for the stories that involve the birth of their culture to take place. It would be difficult to create a story that describes why certain groups of people split up or why a religious ceremony takes place if they didn’t know what started it all. This myth gets a pass for not telling the history or culture of the people, as it serves as the foundation of stories that…

Some art historians agree that it is indeed the initiation of a woman into a mystery cult but that the particular god is impossible to pin down. To respond to this critique requires an examination into the frescoes congruity with earlier artistic depictions of the Dionysian mysteries. In particular, we must look at the gendered nature of the murals, which depict primarily female figures. This is suggestive of the cult of Dionysus, as it was composed of only female followers,…

One day the god of wine came down to earth and heard about all the shooting in the world. Dionysus flew right back to Olympus and went to Zeus. Dionysus asked Zeus if he can come down to earth and try to stop the shooting. Zeus said,” Yes you may, but please take other gods with you.” Dionysus said, “Thank you, but I could go alone.” “No, you cannot,’’ said Zeus.” Dionysus asked, “ Who may I take then?” “You may take Ares and Hercules,” said Zeus. Then, Dionysus went to go look for Ares and Hercules. Dionysus found them and told about what Zeus said and they flew down to Olympus. They flew down to New York and right when they got there, there was trouble. They saw 4 men running out of a store with weapons and a big bag. Ares yelled, “ Hey you get back here!” Ares…
