ENG 110

War for the Planet of the Apes On July 14, 2017 the film “War for the Planet of the Apes” was released showing exactly that, a war. During the two hours that the movie plays, it gives off a great vibe of integrity from the apes. As the movie begins, it gives a rainforest setting where the soldiers are plotting on their next strike against the enemy (the apes) and marching through striving for a victory. As before from the previous movies we see the memorable Caesar (Andy Serkis) as the protagonist, except this time his team of thousands of apes are making history with him. This is a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire two hours; there is never a dull moment. Due to Caesar always being a soldier that is all about putting his desires and plans into action, he does not really discuss with anybody what he is planning to do or how he will achieve his goals. Everyone just knows that the goal is to survive and keep the peace, but for some reason the

At this point Caesar is making his way to this human base with very few of his soldiers with him and a girl who cannot speak named Nova that they find along the way to the base. Caesar’s focus in this movie is beyond remarkable. In the midst of all of this controversy, Caesar is still making sure that his soldiers are learning new things daily, from words, to emotions, even to new movements. There are a lot of movies that tried having this same concept but they would more so have a balance between each sides of conflict stories being told. In “War for the Planet of the Apes” it is much easier to connect to and understand Caesar because we remain on the journey with him while he has much pressure on him. There is a lot more pressure being put on Caesar to bring the human star back before the hour-mark but he remains focus and handles it

The style of the film can be debated and compared with the style of the original Planet of the Apes (1968), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. Matt Reeves decided to focus more on the apes being the central part of the story. “The organic scope of the digitized character creation is breathtaking, using the technology to tell the story from the point of view of the apes, who remain the primary focus of the narrative.”(Kermode, 2014) Mark Kermode even goes on to say, “From its origins… to this state-of-the art 21st-century 3D-CG cinema outing, the darkly satirical Apes saga has proved both resilient and flexible.” (Kermode, 2014) A. O. Scott describes the cinematic quality of the film as having a type of grave, almost brooding beauty about it,…

After a flood of strange events from the preceding night and her nightmares of Caesar’s murder, Calpurnia insists that Caesar heed to the Soothsayer’s prophecy to beware the ides of March. Calpurnia emphasized the grimness of the omens by using alliteration, parallelism, logical appeals, and a terrified tone. She interprets the comets lighting up the night sky seen as a prophecy of his death, reasoning that the heavens proclaim the death of only great men. She envisioned lustful, smiling Romans washing their hands in Caesar's blood. Though it failed to work because her language and tone did not suit Caesar’s way of thinking. Caesar firmly believed that while cowards imagine their death frequently, brave men die only once. Therefore Caesar thought that listening to his wife and staying back was the act of a coward, which he never wanted to consider himself to be. Engulfed by his stubborn pride, Caesar maintains that he will not stay home out of fear. Despite failing to convince Caesar with logic, Calpurnia tries again using an emotional approach by desperately begging him on her knees and requesting him to send Antony to the Senate in his place. Caesar relents and agrees not to go to the Senate to ease Calpurnia’s worry, not because of her argument.…

Even in his absence or death, the manner in which characters address Caesar, describe him, and act in his presence, reveals the authority and influence he has over people's lives. From the first scene, Caesar is presented as victorious, having vanquished his rival, Pompey, and as an extremely popular figure among the people, with the commoners even defying authorities to celebrate his victory. As the play continues into scene ii, Caesar appears before the crowds as a modern-day pop-star, surrounded by a trail of subservient entourage. Casca and Antony display complete submission to Caesar, with the latter declaring that 'when Caesar says Do this! It is done' . In Caesar's absence, fellow patricians, Brutus and Cassius, describe him as 'mighty Caesar', a man who 'has now become a God', and strides in the world 'as a Colossus' . It is therefore evident that his close subordinates are jealously affected by his power, an effect which will later germinate into conspiracy. Even after his assassination, Caesar's ghost continues the task of perpetuating the fear of his everlasting power on those he influenced. Caesar holds enough power over his subjects that he is capable of influencing them continually, in his life and…

However, note that not everyone likes the Coen brothers and if you are one of those people, you probably won't find this movie amusing. In Eugene O’Neill’s story, The Hairy Ape introduces a number of characters such as Robert Smith (Yank), Paddy and Mildred Douglas who come from all walks of life but are all in figurative cages and sometimes literal ones. Some cages they choose to place ourselves in such as addiction, social status and need to sacrifice their freedom to get what they feel each one feels they need in life. While many feel these cages are the fault of others and there is no escape, the opposite is usually true. Yank, Paddy and Mildred each suffer different consequences from their social class cages. The emotional pain from feeling like they have not worth in society to feeling disconnected from the rest of the world, to living in hell and finding any way to cope…
