War In The Trenches
Written by Simon Adams, was published by Franklin Watts in 2004

Reflection: This book talk about what soldiers did in the World War One. They work in a trench which was under cover by darkness; the enemy could not see what was going on. That was the time to bring supplies forwards, send out patrols to reconnoiter enemy lines and undertake running repairs to the trenches, frontline parapets and the barbed-wire defensive fences. Also, stretcher parties went into no-man’s-land to rescue the injured and recover the dead. Dawn and dusk were the most likely times of day when the enemy might

The novel paints a devastating picture of trench warfare, showing it to be unimaginably dangerous and totally destructive of people’s capacity to hope. The aim of the writer seems to be to convey all the horror of war and also his anger at the generals for how they have treated their men. Another intention of the author seems to be to rid the reader of any romantic views of war and of any romantic views of the ability of heroism to make a difference.…

“All Quiet in the Western Front” is a social commentary on how soldiers are effected emotionally and socially throughout the war and are conflicted on how to readjust to their lives after the Great War. Soldiers are conflicted by their character and do not know whether to pick back life up as a youth or as adults who have endured hard circumstances. The book does not focus on battles and it does not focus on a specific time frame, it rather evaluates what goes through the minds of a soldier. These men are literally being bombarded in the war front by explosives and in the home front by misinformed public who want to know the extremity of the war. Bystanders set High expectations for soldiers to be tough and to know how to behave in order to survive, yet those who did not participate in the Great War could only speculate what was going on in the soldier’s minds. The Great War damaged these soldiers physically and mentally, however certain elements gave the survivors the ability to pull through the war. The youth shifted its mentality and lost its innocence in the Great War. Therefore, Remarque did not focus his book on the combat that took place during the Great War, rather he presents social issues, which does not belittle his experience rather it presents a different view of the…

The author Erich Maria Remarque wrote the book All Quiet on the Western Front to present how a group of naive and enthusiastic teenagers endure and suffer from the cruel battlefield during WWI. All of them are motivated by propaganda techniques to join the army and they expected the quick end of the war. However, none of them seems to realize the fact that they are not able to go back unless they died or the enduring war ends. From their belongings, the readers can understand that these people think the war is almost the same as a field research but without a teacher. The story is going to be told along the process of the war. The author will use first person point of view to express his impression towards the war, and…

A part of the Battle of France on the Western Front; The Battle of Dunkirk took place during the Second World War it was between the Allies and Germany. The Battle of Dunkirk was the defense and evacuation of allied forces (mostly British) in France from May 26–June 4 1940. Dunkirk took place after the German army had executed “plan yellow” which basically flanked the allies and caught them off guard. The allies tried to counter attack the Germans but to little result. Germany had the upper hand on the allies as they had the opportunity to seal off the coasts and trap all the troops in France which would lead to their doom. Germany however decided to stall and try to unite all their troops together to prevent…

The Wars, written by Timothy Findley, is a story about World War I, and consists of many shocking images passed over to the reader. Findley accomplishes to pull the reader into the narrative itself, so that the reader manages to feel an impact upon him/her-self about what is read. If it was not for this specific skill, or can also be seen as a specific genre, the novel would not have been as successful as it is now. Also, something that helps the book be so triumphant, there is the fact that Findley never overwhelms the reader with too many gruesome details about the World War I. Instead, he breaks the book down to help the reader calm down from everything that is happening. Throughout the essay, there is going to be some commenting on a text titled "The Literature of World War One for Young Adults", by Dana McFarland, B.A., M.A., M.L.I.S. This text is going to be supported by and partly criticized by with the help of many examples from The Wars, some examples from All Quiet On The Western Front and by using my own knowledge.…

Life in a World War One trench would have been far more hellish than any other experience in previous times. In those days, little thought would have been given to the men fighting the battles; instead it went into the battle plans. In theory, these battle plans would have been successful, but with variables such as troop morale, battlefield conditions, weather, and enemy advances, in practice they had a high failure rate. No commander or general could have accurately planned an attack without taking into account the battle conditions, and allowing leeway for an enemy advance. Unfortunately, the men in commanding positions rarely (if at all) saw the actual conditions of fighting, and this resulted in the loss of many lives. An author by the name of Paul Fussell wrote a chapter in his book 'The Great War and Modern Memory' entitled 'The Troglodyte World'. This refers to the real life experiences of soldiers living and fighting in the trenches, and uses various primary sources to validate his findings.…

Source C shows a group of German soldiers positioned in a trench in northern France. The soldiers in the trench are holding a heavy machine gun and have an advanced gas mask over their faces. This tells me that they are prepared for a gas attack. This photo was taken three years into the war which tells me that gas attacks became more frequent and therefore they felt the need to improve the gas masks to be more prepared. The source is German, and on one hand it is good because it shows us the features of the German trenches and how they are prepared for the attacks and artillery fire but on the other hand it is likely to be staged because the camera is right in front of the machinery so if it was an English source the Germans would have shot the opposition. It is also likely to be staged because it looks more like a whole in a ground than a trench. We do not know the purpose of the source, who produced it, or what it was used for and if there is any other information surrounding it in the museum. Machine guns killed a lot of people in the war but gas attacks also killed many soldiers, there a two types of gas attacks; a chlorine gas attack (turns all the air in your lungs to water, forcing you to drown) and a mustard gas attack (which burns all of your mouth) the soldiers could either have just experienced a gas attack, about to set one off or are preparing themselves for one. The fact that the gas attack method is still being used by 1917 shows it was a useful method and killed a lot of people. Source C has informed me about the use of gas attacks in the trenches in 1917 and it also gives me evidence of other key information about trench warfare in world war one. All though it only shows me the German trench, I can still predict that British trench warfare is similar and therefore it is a useful source.…

You are there: “You hear men in unfamiliar red coats marching up and down your town. There are soldiers upstairs snoring in their slumber. Your parents tell you to not talk to them no matter what, because they have secrets that must be kept and want to protect you from what they do. The last few nights you have heard gunshots and people boycotting, you wish it was just a dream.” The ARW ( American Revolutionary War) was a horrible, scary time for colonists in that time. Many people were killed because of the war, but are still remembered today. The following pages in this book include information like, the important people, Battles, Events that led up to, and hardships in which people went through, that one should know about the…

The purpose of the trench warfare was so that defending units could be protected by small arms fire and provide sheltered against artillery. This shows they would protect as much land from the enemy. Trench warfare was very important in WW1 this is because when the Germans realized that they were going to lose due to Russia and France they dug in and tried not to let the enemy take any of their land back so that their country would grow bigger and stronger. I will be answering the question about, how effective was Trench warfare in World War 1, and how effective was it as a method used by both sides in war Triple Entente and Triple Alliance.…
