There are many reasons why America was forced to declare war on Britain in 1812. As President Madison stated for the cause to declare war were due to the impressments of U.S. sailors by the British, the blockade of U.S. ports, the British supporting the Indians and as well as the British violating America’s neutral rights. To further understand why America went to war; I will explain each of the reasons a bit more clearly with additional details.…
One of the leading causes which made the United States went to war with Great Britain in 1812 was the trade restrictions that England had placed on America. At that time, Britain was at war with France, and they depended on a maritime economic blockade to defeat France. However, America was a neutral side, so American merchants tried to get commercial interests by trading with the French. England wanted to block this trading, so they issued twelve “Orders in Council” to impeded American trade with France during 1783-1812. The new laws caused a lot of difficulties for American merchants because it required many of special licenses. They also made the American economy was into a depression. The United States opposed that these restrictions were illegal under international law. The Anglo-American relations became heavy strain.…
After the War of 1812, America gained a pride from winning the war known as nationalism. This pride caused them to feel inferior to other countries such as Great Britain. This is pointed out in Document H when it is mentioned that Munroe was not willing to be subordinate to Great Britain. Another example of this would be the Monroe Doctrine that was a warning to the European states to stay out of the Western Hemisphere or else they would have to deal with America. Moreover, Document C shows the country celebrating the Fourth of July in a happy spirit. In addition, during the War of 1812, Americans defeated many Native Americans in the west which opened up land for the Americans leading to the Westward Expansion seen in Document E. This expansion was essential because southerners needed more land to grow cotton and tobacco and it also helped citizens with economic difficulties from the Embargo Act that put a tax on goods from Great Britain before the war. Furthermore, with the creation of the American System by Henry Clay, revenues from the tariffs went towards building roads and canals that were needed by the country stated by John Calhoun in Document B.…
During this time, the Americans were at the brink of war against Britain. Tensions between Britain and France ended up affecting the United States, obstructing trade. This angered many Americans, and made the United…
The war of 1812 took place in America and Canada. The Americans fought with the British and natives of the land. When the US and congress declared war on Great Britain, they may not have realized that their success seemed to be doomed to begin with. There was strong lack of support from American citizens to go to war, this was because of several reasons. Divided forces from different states caused problems and didn’t want to cooperate or complete certain tasks. Ports were not being allowed for war usage because citizens didn’t feel the need to go to war. There was a huge national debt to pay off from the previous war with Britain, and finally because of political differences. This all ties in with he lack of support from citizens not wanting…
The war of 1812 was a conflict between the United States and Britain. Many factors influenced Americans to go to war. They hoped to expand the United States by seizing control of Canada and Florida. Three important factors that helped Americans make a decision to go to war was the embargo policies, impressments, and the expansionist goal of the war hawks. Americans saw the War of 1812 as an opportunity to defend their freedom and…
The War of 1812 was fought between Britain and the United States. The blockading and seizing of American ships and impressment of the ships workers by the British Royal Navy was the cause of the war. In addition, the British did not recognize the United States sovereignty and incited the Native Americans against them such as…
The War of 1812 was a war that lasted approximately two to three years between the British and the United States it is also known as the “second war of Independence”, because of the agreement also known as the Treaty of Ghent, which of course ended the War of 1812 on February 17, 1815. This war was about the British cut off supplies to the United States because the British didn’t want to give supplies to the enemy; The Royal Navy also took seamen from the U.S. merchant ships and forcing them to work for the British, and also the last battle the Battle of Baltimore.…
The reasons for the War of 1812 were twofold. First, the impressment of American sailors challenged American neutrality and national pride. Second, War Hawks, such as Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, wanted to use the war as a means for expansion into British Canada and for the removal of the prevailing Indian threat. Even though the war resulted in an indecisive victory, Americans celebrated because they survived their second war with the British and even defeated them at naval duels and at the Battle of New Orleans. This victory immediately led to a rise in nationalism. However, the war’s lasting effects included a rise in sectionalism, which ultimately contributed to the Civil War. Because the lasting effects had a longer and more profound…
No, I do not believe the War of 1812 was completely necessary. Although we did achieve our initial goal of stopping impressment, the execution was done very sloppily. One factor was the communication. For example, Britain actually stopped impressing two days before war was even declared. This basically means that the War of 1812 did not accomplish anything. Not only that, but there was another communication error at the end of the war. After the Treaty of Ghent was signed, the Battle of New Orleans took place for some reason. These communication errors absolutely were unnecessary and so was the war. In fact, the aforementioned Treaty of Ghent, it states there would be a cease fire, meaning no one had actually won the war. It’s even more disheartening…
And in the end, everything returning to status quo ante bellum, that is, as they were prior to the war. It raises the question, “Why did we fight?” That large topic is not the subject of this post. I’ll simply say (and perhaps will go more in depth on the matter in a future post) that the war clearly had more to do with western territory than anything else, setting up a pattern for all U.S. wars in the 19th century. The traditional interpretation, which many of us were taught, focuses on the issue of sovereignty on the high seas and the notion of the War of 1812 as the “Second War of Independence.”…
A positive effect of the War of 1812 was that it sparked nationalism among the Americans. Although they were very unorganized and split during the war, the result of this war causes them to unite and become proud to be Americans. First, there was a major incline in American literature and a decline in British literature. Most famously, Washington Irvin and James Cooper were among America’s first writers, and used American themes and scenes in their novels. Also the North American Review, a magazine, was published and sold many copies to the people. Before this war, American books were usually political such as Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. Secondly, this patriotism caused many men to join the army and navy and help fight for America. This was good because now men felt like if they stood strong against British twice in war; they definitely were stronger than expected. This gave much hope to American and encouraged people to sign up as war soldiers. In 1815 Stephen Decatur won a series of battles in North Africa and made a famous toast that showed he was a proud American. Lastly, the demand for better transportation in America was huge evidence that Americans expressed nationalism for their country. They loved their country so much that they wanted to make it safer and nicer by making roads and canals. Most famously, the Erie Canal was completed in the year 1825 and made a huge step towards better transportation. This canal connected the Hudson River with the Great Lakes and allowed people and goods to move to and from destinations quickly and cheaply. All this nationalism made America independent from Britain and it showed Britain that they were fine on their own.…
According to Merriam-Webster, historians define a world war as “a war involving many nations of the world.” World War I, also known in Great Britain as “The Great War,” had a tremendous financial and psychological impact on western civilization and the world. World War I marked the beginning of great technological achievements, which lead to the inventions and use of mustard gas, tanks, submarines, and airplane bombs. However, World War I merits the title “The Great War” because of its immediate and long-term causes, devastating major battles, treaty that settled peace to the world, and provoking results.…
The War of 1812 was a pivotal turning point for Native Americans because of their continuing hardships for governing themselves. The war also drove the U.S toward “economic independence, as the wartime interruption of trade with Europe forced America to expand its manufacturing sector”. The Treaty of Ghent ended the conflict though it did not address the initial reason President Madison had declared war at all. The impacts the War of 1812 had on the United States was an overall enhanced “national self-confidence and encouraged… American expansionism”. This helped to mold the better portion of the 19th century.…
These issues were the main reason that the war was even fought. However the Treaty of Ghent - that ended the war - did not actually address any of the issues that had sparked the initial conflict but instead was more of a return to the conditions before the start of the war. However the fighting at locations such as New Orleans had the Americans shown in a new light where they stood up once again for what they believed in. However this time it was for the rights of neutral nations whereas compared to the Revolutionary War that was based more on the idea they were fighting more for the right to form a democracy - government for the people. This caused America to gain respect in the eyes of Europe which in turn caused the issues with Britain to come to a stop due to this newfound European respect of America.…
