November 7, 2010 Abraham Lincoln known as ‘Honest Abe’, the 16th and the first Republican President of the United States, guided his country through the most devastating experience in its National History the Civil War. However, Lincoln is considered by many historians to have been the greatest American President. So, was Abraham Lincoln America’s Greatest President? Yes, says Phillip Shaw Paludan contends that Abraham Lincoln’s greatness exceeds that of all other American President because Lincolns, in the fact of unparalleled challenges associated with the Civil War, succeeded in preserving the union and freeing the slaves.
I agree with him on that Abraham Lincoln was the greatest president of them all because of his powerful leadership during the Civil War and the impact of that leadership on the moral and political character of the nation. He used his role as president to uphold the Constitution, but also to preserve, protect, and defend it during a war which, he in essence started. As well as being credited with winning the most important war in America’s History, he is also considered to have abolished the institution of slavery and set in motion the Civil Rights Movement. He was the sixteenth, and first Republican, President.
The American History Article said, “Abraham Lincoln is remembered as a visionary leader, a gifted orator and one of America 's greatest presidents. In his time, however, he faced harsh criticism for his handling of the Civil War and his expansion of executive power. Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated he was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just six days after Robert E. Lee 's surrender at Appomattox, and died the next morning.”
Lincoln is justly considered our greatest president. He was a masterful politician, sensitive to and yet constantly shaping public opinion, skilled at balancing
