Water Goblin
A collection of poems was written by Karel Jaromír Erben under the title Kytice in 1853. In 1896, Dvorak used this collection of poems to compose four pieces: Vodnik (The Water Goblin), Zlaty kolovrat (The Golden Spinning-wheel), Polednice (the Noonday Witch) and Holoubek (The Wild Dove).
The work was written in a form of a rondo (when the music alternates themes).
The Water Goblin is known as a creature of European mythology, called the Vodyanoy. He was depicted as an elderly man with a frog face and covered in mud and algae. The Slavic version of the Vodyanoy depicts the goblin with a human body, green skin, gills, webbed hands and often wearing old, patchy clothing. He is known to capture the souls of those he drowns, and keep them in
his porcelain cup.
