ABENES, FAITH MICAH D. Thesis 1
BSEd-Physical Science Dr. Magno M. Quendangan

Title: Fiber from Water Hyacinth for pulp and handmade paper production.

Name of the Researchers: Loxa F. Camacali Maylene R. Roce

Statement of the Problem:
1. Is it possible to produce paper from extracted fiber of water?
2. What are the physical characteristics of the paper produced from the extracted fiber of water hyacinth?
3. Is there significant differences is the produced paper from the extracted fiber from water hyacinth to that of the commercially available paper as tested to their strengths?

Scope and Delimitation The plant on which we will obtain and try to utilize for pulp and paper making as Water Hyacinth. In doing this, the roots, leaves, stalks were separated. Physical test such as tensile strengths was utilized to know the maximum tension to which a material can respond without breaking. The study includes also the determination of the bursting strength of paper, tearing resistance using Elmendorf Tearing Resistance Tester, and Folding endurance test using MIT Folding Tester.

Research Method Used: Experimental Research is the method used.

Methodology:
1. Sampling
2. Chemical Pulping
3. Washing, Riasing,Sieving and Handpicking.
4. Disintegration and Beating
5. Bleaching/Dyeing
6. Pressing
7. Drying

Conclusion: Based on the result obtained on the analysis it shows that there is no significant between the paper produced from fibers of water hyacinth and then of the commercially available paper. The fiber dimensions indicate that the water hyacinth may be good material for pulp and paper making. Water Hyacinth can be utilized for making medium quality paper and paperboards.

Recommendations We strongly recommended to enhance the paper used a certain percentage of other fibrous pulps, wasted paper pulps etc., used the blended water hyacinth pulp. These also help to minimize the shrinkage

This gave me a much more solid understanding for the process of papermaking. The paper itself is made from the fibers of a species of Ficus tree, called Amate in Yukatek, and coated with a fine layer of lime plaster. To make this paper, first bark from trees is collected, torn into small bits, and then soaked over a period of time to soften the bark for when it is turned into pulp. Once the pulp reaches the desired level it is rinsed with clean water and then kept in water until it is processed. The pulp is then arranged onto boards and beaten into a thin flat paper. The paper is then taken to dry, which could have taken anywhere from two hours to two days depending on the…

A paper towel (also called kitchen roll) is an absorbent textile made from paper instead of cloth. Unlike cloth towels, paper towels are disposable and intended to be used only once. Paper towels soak up water because they are loosely woven which enables water to travel between them, even against gravity. Paper towels can be individually packed (as stacks of folded towels or held coiled). Paper towels have almost the same purposes as conventional towels, such as drying hands, wiping windows, dusting and cleaning up spills and home-cleaning. They are most commonly known for being used in kitchen. Because paper towels are disposable, they are often chosen to avoid the spreading of germs.[1]…

The prominent surfaces on which manuscripts and Arabic books were written were parchment (riqq, raqq, or jild), papyrus (a plant grows near water), and paper. According to Arvin, “ The earliest writing, mostly short inscription, can be found in building and coins, on camel shoulder blades and ribs, on palm bark, leather (from buffalo, sheep, and, in Persia, oxen), limestone, ostraca, linen, silk that was treated with gum and smoothed by mussel shells, and wooden board.”(11:221) In addition, at that time, parchment was expensive and luxury material for books, particularly for the Quran. Samarqand, Cairo, and Damascus manufactured parchments with high quality which were mostly used for the Quran and less often for the other manuscripts. Sheep…

Paper is made from the papyrus plant by separating it with a needle point into very thin strips as broad as possible. The choice quality comes from the center, and thence in the order of slicing. The (choice) quality in former times called 'hieratic' because it was devoted only to religious books has, out of flattery, taken on the name of Augustus, and the next quality that of Livia, after his wife, so that the 'hieratic' has dropped to third rank.…
