Watershed Course Reflection
Wearing a thick and warm sweater, I pictured the last summer in my head, which seem like something that happened in the last century. Looking back, I still remember the moment when Fenix, Cecilia, and I discovered that we were placed in the same connections course, we asked the same question: “so what exactly is a watershed?” We only vaguely remember this was something about the regions associated with rivers.
“So we will study something about the watershed and write papers about it to practice our writing skills?” This is what I had anticipated how this course would be like.
However, this course provided much more insight than I have ever imagined. From its application to the watershed, I gained a more profound understanding of the significance of collaborating, stepping back, and being open minded to new ideas. These values are not only the essential aspects in the watershed management, but also some important take-aways for future collaborations with others.

From assignment 1 to assignment 6, there seems to be clear improvements. I am gradually learning to use accurate and precise language and to follow the MLA format, which I did not know at all before taking this course. From September to December, like a kitten peeking through the curtains, I started to speak up in class, and participate more in order to share my perspective with my classmates.     We were all sucked dry from the sun that day with zero energy left, we scavenged what we could and we still ate better than we could have at any local dinner. The day was still long and was only going to get hotter and longer even as the day came to a close. There was more things to do around the land than there was at any theme park.     Introduction In this study, a rainfall simulation was conducted in order to measure infiltration rates at the Low Stony Hill site in Gatesville, Texas. Rainfall simulations are important contributors to understanding infiltration and factors, which influence infiltration rate, such as bulk density, plant biomass and percent cover, and topography. The objective of this study is to utilize the rainfall simulation to examine and understand the interrelationships of the factors that influencing infiltration and how these factors directly influence infiltration. Site Description The study area is in Gatesville, Texas in Coryell County called the Low Stony Hill range site, which is located at 31° 23’ N and 97° 43’ W at an elevation of 231.6 m (NOAA 2005). The study area is primarily composed of live oak savannah with a tree canopy cover of less than 20 percent. Live oak mottes, elm (Ulmus spp.), and hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) can be found along water basins (GREER 2005). The vegetation in the Low Stony Hill site is composed of 85% herbaceous vegetation, 10% woody vegetation, and 5% forbs (Greer 2005). A few of the notable herbaceous species include little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula), and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi). The vegetation of Low Stony Hill is also composed a variety of species of forbs. The soils at this site include Eckrant cobbly silty clay (EcB) soils ranging from shallow to very shallow; however, the soil is well drained with moderately slow permeability and rapid surface runoff with 1-3 percent slopes. Methods Soil characteristics, which affect infiltration rates and are crucial to understanding infiltration, include bulk density, vegetation, and microtopography.
