Personal Narrative: Cousin Lane
It was a long hot summer day as me and my cousins sat around the tank at our ranch as we thought of something to do after the morning dove hunt was over. I was 10, my cousin Lane was twelve, and the rest of my cousins ages ranged all the way from seven to thirteen. We were all drained from the sun, with our young age we couldn't sit in the sun and possibly have an energy. Lane is the oldest as he lead the pack with such a great lead he was disappearing over the distant hills. Austin was so young we were having to carry his gun and shells. Anson was the second youngest, and Austins brother, they were almost in the same condition but with Ansons older age he was able to carry his own weight. Ryan was dragging behind with his heavier set body …show more content…
The dogs breath was hot, their faces were covered in blood and feathers as they waited for a drink of water, we picked up our dove and shells out of the powdery dirt field filled with sun flower seeds. With the west Texas sun pouring over our backs it felt like we would never even make it back to the cabin with out the smallest sip of water. We walked on the rocky dirt roads with totes full of birds dragging the butts of our guns as we could no longer hold them up, just waiting for the sounds of our parents vehicles to appear. Just at the time we thought we would have to end up walking miles back to the house the sounds of tires crunching rocks and air conditioner blasting made its way up over the hills. We immediately slumped over the nearest laid down log threw our gear down and watched our dogs crawl to the nearest shade tree, and we waited and waited and waited for the trucks to arrive, as we waited it felt like it took them a fortnight to reach us. As they got to us there was no other thoughts in any of our minds than to get a drink. It didn't matter to any of us what it was along as it was a cool liquid. Reaching into that cold cooler and feeling that freezing cold mist come off the ice hitting us in was the best feeling that we had felt so far that …show more content…
We were all sucked dry from the sun that day with zero energy left, we scavenged what we could and we still ate better than we could have at any local dinner. The day was still long and was only going to get hotter and longer even as the day came to a close. There was more things to do around the land than there was at any theme park. So as we all sat around and waited for something to do you could tell that everyone was thinking the same thing as sweat poured down all of our faces. The cold spring fed creek was the only thing that was going through my mind and I knew that was the only thing going through anyone else’s. We walked down to the creek as there was no other way that you could reach it, and as we got closer and closer you could hear the light eco of the fifteen foot waterfall coming off of the trees. The only thing I was looking for was the spit of the water flowing up through the large oak and misquote tree branches. You knew when everyone saw the water, you could see the sight of the crystal clear water shining off of everyones eyes and you could tell that there was a sudden sign of relief that came upon everyone after the long walk through the large misquote trees avoiding as many thorns and cactuses as they possibly could, being careful as could be you weren't going to miss all of them. And there was no better feeling than soaking your wounds in that

The splashes of the freezing spillway mixed with the cold wind coming off the water sent chills down my back. I yawned, the loud purr of the tugboat next to us made it impossible to hear my uncle ask if I was tired. We were passing the train of barges right after we left the launch and were headed into the woods. I have done all this before. It was all familiar to me. The only difference was that I had never been out here this early. The eerie white light of the moon was the only thing that let us see right now. Luckily for us the moon was huge and full tonight. It was about 4:30 in the morning and we were speeding into the swamps of the spillway. I looked at my uncle and I saw him standing up, driving the boat, with a smile on his face. This was his job and he loved it. When you love the wilderness, being out in the woods for eight hours a day was a treat. Especially when it ended with picking up a paycheck of about a thousand dollars at the end of each of those days.…

“I remember tears streaming … your face … I said I'll never let you go … all those shadows almost killed your … … you said don't leave me … alone But … that's dead and gone … tonight.” Strikes of swift white light struck innocent trees, as wind howled and rain battered against the shield that separated me from the outside. One foot, two feet, I stepped out from the safe haven, like a Cobra, pounding against it protective shell, awaiting to spread its deadly poison. My face was a river, water tumbled from the top of my head to the bottom of my chin.…

The acrid curses that followed only led me to tear more, but the bittersweet aftertaste of each tear soothed the pain in my wound. Slowly it recovered and the bleeding had stopped, casting the last tear into the puddle beneath. ~~~ Dark, gloomy clouds infuse the horizon as the prolonged day tardily transformed into the polar opposite of light. A droplet of rain water landed on the side of my cheek as we stared at above.…

Rays of sun gleamed upon the bronzed skin of my family while splashing clear green water of the Tennessee River. It was my parents, grandfather, two sisters, niece, and my brother in law. Exhaustion quickly crept among us after a day filled with intense activities such as; skiing, competitive volleyball, and long boat rides on the fragile, slow moving pontoon. We then prepared ourselves for the boat ride home which would soon be a tragedy rapidly moving towards our direction.…

So we begin to walk the couple miles to the river, pulling our wagons. I am puzzled to mom’s cheerfulness after what I heard last night. I begin to wonder if this may be our last trip to the river. Our water was much too contaminated to even try to boil. The pipes ended up getting clogged and didn’t work anymore. Our family and others are very dependent on this river. Maybe, we’re all moving East, finally away from this nightmare. It’s where all my friends went. My parents were hoping the dust would all end soon enough. That’s why they decided to stay.…

Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

I knew I wouldn’t make it to the top of the murky, warm and brown waters. I could feel the oxygen being released quickly from my lungs and bubbles swiftly skimming my skin as I slowly reached the bottom of the lake. I heard the faint cries for help and loud splashing as my sight becomes blurred. I felt someone’s hands grab mine and pull me onto the grainy dusty dirt. My vision comes back and I feel everyone’s eyes on me. They all immediately start laughing at me as I stood up and brushed the dirt off of me, feeling something tightly clutch my body.…

Everything was silent at first, as are most moment’s right before a major storm. People were roaming around, minding their own business and going about their days like nothing was wrong. It was quite clear most were trying to rush to get everything accomplished before the downpour, but no one knew how soon it would happen. Suddenly, as young eyes searched around the area for a treat for being a good boy during the trip, the wind suddenly picked up. Papers and leaves blew about, some flying in front of his face. This caused him to let go of the hand he was holding onto so he could rub at his eyes. He heard a voice, but the wind was too loud for him to hear over.…

I gazed upon beautiful pastures occupied by the utmost emaciated cows I had ever seen, assorted with goats that backed into a vast mountain range to my left, while cars and motorcycles zoomed past myself to my right as if I was moving in slow motion. I felt entangled by the chaos, but yet, I felt this internal sense of peace that I had never felt before. My eyes glistened as I took in the beauty enveloped in the disaster that stood in front of me. I drew in a breath and exhaled subsequently, at that moment prepared myself to…

My adolescent legs strain as I continue along the path aimlessly, my stomach rumbles in emptiness as I realise I left without food. How can one think of such things at a time like that? I most certainly didn't, and now the only thing dwelling in my gut was the sore pain that was the increasing hate for the cruel beings that raised me. Lost in my thoughts my melancholy walking pattern is disrupted as my foot catches on a thick branch and I fall swiftly face first into a small jagged rock. Dazed, I lift myself up from the ground and dust myself off; my left eyelid closes automatically as blood rolls down the top of my face. Cursing, I wipe my face with my sleeve, soaking the cotton a blackish-red instantly. The shock dissipates and pain sets in, sharp agony mixed with a strange tingling sensation on my forehead. I forcedly push the pain to the back of my mind, and go to take my next step just as a small blue spherical object reflecting the moon catches my eye on the edge of the track. Interested, I walk over to it, and pick it up in my hands. After examining the dirt caked ball, images of my younger brother flash through my mind. Times spent together, kicking a ball in the backyard, taking him to his first movie, and then screams of pain, blood, oh god the blood is.... The ball drops to the ground as my hand trembles from the horrible images. I kick it far away off the trail in anger as Im reminded of the situation Im in. The smoky scent of a…

Further in the woods I come across the cabin we used to stay in when I was a child. Now it looks like something you would see in a scary movie. Since the death of my grandfather no one comes here anymore and the cabin has given way to the force of nature. One time this was such a beautiful place. As I head back down the dirt trail it begins to sprinkle rain. The rain smells like fresh laundry that was put on a line to dry.…
