One evening my mother told me that thereafter, I would have to do the shopping for food. She took me to the corner store to show me the way. I was proud; I felt like a grownup. The next afternoon, I looped the basket over my arm and went down the pavement toward the store. When I reached the corner, a gang of boys grabbed me, knocked me down, snatched the basket, took the money, and sent me running home in panic.…
That day, my friends had gone to the bathroom and were staying there for a long time. They had asked me to go too, but I knew that they were up to mischief again, so I refused. However, after a long time, they still hadn’t returned. The teacher asked me to go with a classmate to check on them.…
As I was reading the writer’s background I found out that he was a comedian and I automatically assumed that this story was going to be funny and I was wrong.…
This story developed from the author’s understanding of the importance of memory, an understanding which came from her observation of someone who no longer had their memory. When one has no memory they cannot remember painful episodes in their life. Some people with memories of horrors, losing those memories can seem to be a blessing. But, if they also cannot recall the emotions…
We got up and had breakfast and then took a bus to the airport. My parents were wondering if the lady named Lily would get the baskets to us on time before we left the country to go back home. And there she was riding in a cab with the window down and the baskets out the window tied down with a string. So my dad asked the lady how much she wanted for the baskets and she said 100 yuans. But over here it is like sixteen dollars. So the lady was so happy and so grateful for the…
The most humorous details are the different experiences I had commuting to and from work. One day I was almost robbed on my way to work. Some stranger came up to me and asked me if my purse was expensive. Originally, I didn't respond to him, but then he persisted to grab my purse. Then a group of older men attacked him and I got my purse back and the thief got arrested.…
Diana Ahmad in The Opium Debate and Chinese Exclusion Laws in the Nineteenth-Century American West (University of Nevada Press, 2007) argues that in addition to the traditional explanations for the Chinese Exclusion Act, (economic, political and more recently, prostitution) smoking opium was part of the reason many Anglo-Americans pushed for Chinese exclusion. Ahmad also distinguishes smoking-opium and medicinal-opium as two separate entities, claiming that it was the smoking variety that offended the moral character of Anglo-Americans.…
Upon my debarkation in the United States, I had the window seat and I awoke to the scene of our plane landing in JFK Airport. My mother and I walked off the plane and over towards a currency exchange booth to trade in our paltry of pesos for American dollars. As a young girl I did not quite yet understand why she suddenly appeared sickly while tucking away a twenty and four singles into her bra. It wasn't until years later when I came to the realization that she was truly exchanging her life for my own ambiguous future and education at that booth. We met up with my father and younger brother in the parking lot and began our walk, our march into the foggy country that awaited…
Everyone agreed to go to a specific place. We planned to go to an island. Canigao Island is a beautiful place. It is a tourist must see designation. My family and I arrived on the island by a boat. As soon as we all got off the boat, we started walking towards medium sized huts. We all started placing our belongings inside the hut. Therefore, all the adults started to prepare the food. Hours had passed by, the day had gone by fast and it was time to pack up. Everyone was gathering their belongings and afterwards, it was time to head back to the boat and…
I have a lot of funny things that has happened in my life really too many situations. From me peeing on myself when I was young, to my football pants ripping when I scored a touchdown my junior year in high school. I look back on all of my situations now and just laugh, because it’s not that serious to me no more. I have two favorite situations that have happened to me in my lifetime. One of my funniest situations is last weekend when I went back home to Memphis and my second funniest moment, is when I was sleep one night one of my homeboys put mustard in my hand and made me rub my face. My last but not least favorite moment is when my little brother scared my grandma by acting like a ghost.…
The first stop on senior trip was the beach. It was the perfect first stop because we had been cooped up in the bus for 30 hours. The sun was shinning and we were ready to explore our summer playground. The morning seemed as though it was going to be a normal day; that is until my friend Stephen Hyer had an idea. He wouldn’t tell us where or what we were doing; he only said it was going to be awesome. We all ran into a hotel bathroom and then he told us his plan to make duct tape Speedos. He had brought regular underwear for us to put tape on. Then he put out the tape. There was red, blue, green, zebra print, and others. In the midst of us helping each other create our bathing suits, a little kid came in and went to the bathroom. I assume that he had seen far worse because he stared for a second and then did his business and left like nothing ever happened. The thirty year old man however walked in, stared at us, we froze, then he left very quickly. Stephen felt obligated to yell after him, “Wait, we can make room!”…
Experiences of failure throughout life can be challenging to overcome. But later on, as you learn from those, they can be the building blocks of achieving success later on in life. An example of going through failure and learning from the experience to be able to work harder and find success was the soccer season of my freshman. During my season of club soccer, my team played in Austin Labor Day Cup tournament in Pflugerville, Texas in the fall of my freshman year of high school. It was the first big tournament of the year for our club team because we were placed in a group much more competitive than the others. We also played in a year up in division so we knew to come very well prepared before we made the hour long trip to the Austin area that weekend. The week before, we had trained all week long in the heat, so to come down to Austin and not be successful would be a huge disappointment to not only the team but the supporters of the club and parents. But we were too psyched for the big week ahead.…
No one ever asked me about that incident, and I went to CVS to buy first aid kid, and cover my wound myself. The food wasn’t good too. They were all left overs from three days ago. I always got Stomachache after I ate their food. I really missed my family sometimes. I hoped they could come by and live with me for couple days. I had a thought, which is going back to China, but my parents didn’t allow me. Nevertheless, I started having friends in high school, and they made me forget all the hardships I need face. I got used to my school and living conditions completely after three months I got here. And now, I have no troubles to live by myself in a foreign country, and the previous three years experiences encourage me to face more challenges in the future. The courage that my friends and my family bestowed is really helpful for me. I won’t be here without their mentally supports. As a result, life is full of hardships, but having courage and perseverance to challenge them can make us successful. Courage can give us power to persist, and no matter how hard the challenges will be, the people who have perseverance are the…
Today is the first day of my SPM examination. I had promised to my dad to get straight A’s in all subjects and the X-Box 360 was on the line, so that I could not afford to miss my Bahasa Melayu exam or fail to sit for it. After taking my super fast shower, I ran downstairs and skipped several staircases. Luck was not with me, I accidently had kicked my fat cat which was lying on the last staircase. I fell hard on the floor and my face was just a millimeter away from my father’s favourite solid metal Liberty Statue floor lamp which he had bought last year on our previous family trip. I was nearly sent to the hospital than getting myself to school. My knees and elbows were numbed and hurt. I ignored the pain and quickly got back on my foot. My mum was smiling cynically at me as she was used to my attitude of being late to school. Poor Jinggo was running hysterically and hiding under the dining chair taking his cover for any incoming assault he may receive. He must be regretted of mistakenly choosing a wrong spot in the house to relax himself this morning. It was not his first time, perhaps he really loves the spot even it came with a high risk warning sign on it.…
This is something,me and all my friends remember and I think will remember for rest of our lives. The incident is a real funny one.During my school days, when am in class 5,some of my friends and me,back benchers, never pay attention to the class and always like to talk. So,one day the teacher gets angry and punished us!So,we were standing outside the class and still talking, and then he called us inside the class and orders for a knee down! We,suddenly, got offended and started mumbling sounds, like aeroplane, cat's meow sound, dog's barking and many others and the teacher failed to recognize which student is making such sounds,so he orders us to stand in queue and then came with a scale in hand, and we,few,10 in numbers, ran like anything, outside the…
