We Alone by Alice Walker is about how we have the ability to value or devalue objects. The only reason gold is so expensive is because we as people have a high demand for it. After all it is just an object found in earth just like rocks and iron and seashells and leaves. However, as a society we have chosen to value the shiny gold matter.
The poem is made up of free verse there is no rhyme or pattern to the poem. The tone of the poem is optimistic and also tired of materialistic objects. It almost seems as if the poet is frustrated with economic problems or tired of people worrying about money.

Walker also relates the poem to herself stating that the 10 year old was on her parents sharecropper’s land. Walker grew up that way so this poem is most likely something related to what she went through as a child. It doesn’t necessarily mean that she was upset at the end of summer. It can signify many things. Maybe she got her period that summer and that was the point in time where she no longer identified herself as a child.
The tone of the poem is curiosity because curiosity is what leads her to stray away from her home and also acceptance because after she stepped into the school she calmed herself and looked around, while also leaving flowers for the corpse as a sign of respect.
Alice Walker must have wrote this poem because she knew that what she experienced as a child was not something unique. That moment of transition is something everyone experiences at a point in their life before becoming an adult. Putting an experience into poetry allows readers to take what they want, some even take it as a way of advice or a sign. Stressing eats away at people and is harmful. People should just live life by surprise and not expect anything. If nothing is expected nothing can disappoint. If nothing disappoints no harm was done, no feelings were hurt. Everyone’s happy. I really enjoyed this poem. It is something i had never really thought about. I believe that if everyone were to start thinking about things this way we would all be much more content with our lives. There would be no hard feelings and no resentment. Of course i don't believe this could create a perfect world or society but it would be a start to bring back reality to those that expect everything from everyone and
