We Passed The School Emily Dickinson Analysis
The meaning of this text is death; it comes and it goes. Death is inevitable, and you cannot prevent it. I think this poem explains how cold and dark death is, that it does not wait for anyone. I enjoyed reading this poem because it expresses that life is valuable, and memories are cherished. I took this poem and based it off of some event in my life where I lost the ones I loved, and I feel that has helped me write my melody. “We passed the school, we passed the fields, and we passed the setting sun,” This text explains relaxation; last known memories before going into darkness. Tension, and instability are represented in the last part of the poem, “or rather-he passes us- the dews drew quivering and chill.” Motion is explained when Dickinson writes “ we slowly drove-He knew no haste” one can almost picture death carrying the …show more content…
The two greatest challenges for me in trying to express this meaning were first, putting myself in the situation, and the second, is the first time writing my melody it did not reflect how I felt about the poem or myself. In order for me to put myself in the situation I based this poem off of the time I lost a good friend of mine. I remembered how I felt and what it taught me, and I knew from then on I would never take a second of my life for granted. The feelings I felt from that event I used to create my melody; a dark but calm feeling, like everything is ok, but in reality it is not. Therefore, I found that the low point is in the beginning of the poem because the person is troubled by immortality, so that is why in my melody, it starts off slow and then speeds up to reflect the passing of memories; “we passed the school”. The low point also expresses the sudden drop in the pit of your stomach when you find out a loved one has died. In addition, I correlated rhythm, and based it off of a rising heartbeat, and increased anxiety;

    The structure of this poem is complex and it tied directly into the figurative meaning. This poem consists of three quatrains written in iamic meter but with no set number of feet per line. Also, the second and fourth lines of each quatrain thyme somewhat. Perhaps the most perplexing attribute of the structure is that Dickinson capitalizes words in mid-sentence that would not normally be capitalized. This could represent decaying objects; capitalized words represent things still standing and lowercase words represent things decayed. This poem is choppy at timed, but it flows smoothly at others. Long hyphens throughout the poem slow down reading speed. This could be compared to the rate of decay.
