The research conducted has several strengths and weaknesses to be addressed. To begin, I believe that the following areas within the article could be altered: population studied, position of camera, time workers have to adapt and adopt implementation, employees observed working with residents, and a larger sample size. The following areas could be added: definitions of topics, a controlled group, and observation of long-term effects of the programs. Finally, the following areas should be kept: training of the direct care workers, follow up of direct care workers, and acquiring the sample from four facilities.
The research article mentions the umbrella term of Dementia, more specifically focusing on the residents with moderate …show more content…
The camera was placed on a tripod in an area where the worker could easily reach to turn it on and off. The usage of the recordings was to observe only the interactions between the worker and the resident which provides reasoning of the placement but I suggest either have it at an angle, high up in a corner or have multiple recording devices to cover all angles. Unfortunately, those suggestions interfere with privacy policies as having cameras in patient rooms is invasive and the use of multiple cameras can be …show more content…
Although the researchers included charts, it does not provide a clear definition of what each stands for. The study mentions that the worker must provide personal care to the individual; however this excludes physicians, nurses and social workers. Therefore, I am uncertain as to whom the direct care worker would be, could it be an aide or a Certified Nursing Assistant? The article also lacks a description of the program in use, in regards to the training the direct care workers received. The article did not include an example describing a morning routine implemented, as to show what can occur during that time allotment. Simultaneously, I felt that the study also lacked a clear description of the behavior being observed. The researchers stated the primary focus was to observe the engagement during the morning routine. However, there were also secondary observations such as eye contact, mood, and verbal and nonverbal communication. The meanings are different from individual to individual. With that said, I believe that the descriptions and/or definitions for direct care workers, the program/intervention used, and behaviors are necessary to state so that the audience understand and are on the same page as the researchers.
The lack of a controlled group may affect scores or results obtained. A control group
