The Minie ball greatly influenced the Civil War, causing many people to die, and changes in many other areas. Like all the wars before it, during the Civil War many large technological breakthroughs occurred. One of the biggest, and most influential changes for personal weapons was the evolution from the smoothbore muskets to rifles, and even more so, the Minie ball that allowed the rifling to realistically be used in a battle situation. The bullets also had another plus: causing huge damage to anyone they hit. Blood and screams were heard all around the battlefield from the Minie ball tearing through flesh and shattering bone.…
The Killer Angels is the book I chose to read for my American Civil War Documentary project. It is a historical novel about real people in history and real events. The story takes place in the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863 during the Civil War. Gettysburg was the site of one of the most significant battles in the American Civil War, and this book describes the three day event in great deal.…
In the late 1800’s there was tension between the North and South. It soon got worse when Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. Soon after he won the election the southern states seceded from the Union, and then started the Civil War. The reason the Union won the Civil War was because of the technological advances such as weapons, railroads, and creation of the telegraph. Weapons were helped by advances in technology because it gave shooting more distance and velocity, “minie ball” bullets, and advancements in rifles.…
Old tactics and training became inefficient with the introduction of these modern weapons. Thus, the U.S Civil war became unparalleled in the advancement of military history. The war became the first to utilize rail and water ways combined with armored ships to create a battlefield stretching thousands of miles. The Union, in 1864, was the side to truly embrace this new technology coupled with older tactics to create a brilliant plan under the leadership of Grant. It was a three pronged attack strategy that would result in the military campaign to end the Civil…

During the American Civil War many advancements in weapon technology were made. However many older stratagems and newer weapons were still being used by both the Union and Confederate forces. This combination of more accurate, faster-firing weapons and outdated tactics would result in the highest amount of casualties of any American war. The Battle of Gettysburg alone, for example, resulted in approximately 50,000 casualties. The improvements of military and civilian technology also aided both sides of the war, from telegrams and railroads to artillery and rifles.…
Of all of the technological advances made by the time of the Civil War, the rifle had the biggest and best impact. The rifle was made much sooner than the Civil War. It was used as a piece of limited numbers and typically by specific troops in the midst of the Revolutionary War. At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 both sides were still essentially using the old smooth-bore muskets. These muskets were not correct and did not have a long range. The weapon had a smooth barrel which used a round lead ball as ammunition. Right when given up the lead ball would bounce around inside the barrel. This made for inaccurate shots . After the Civil War had begun mass producing rifles instead of the old smooth-bore muskets.Rifles were a far superior…
The Gatling Gun didn’t see much action during the Civil War except for a battle and gun ship wars. The Gatling Gun was designed in 1861 and patented November 4th, 1862 (The Gatling Gun). Jams often occurred in this model because the barrels and chamber didn’t always a line properly (Gatling Gun). The Union army didn’t adopt this version because of the many problems it had even though it proved successful in the field tests (Foner). Gatling made an improvement version in 1862 which solve most issues within the gun. This model is also the model that the U.S. Navy adopted (Gatling Gun). The Gatling Gun was considered the first successful machine gun (Gatling Gun). General Benjamin F. Butler bought twelve Gatling Guns for 1000 dollars apiece (Foner). These were used in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in 1864 (The Gatling…
The Civil War resulted in the creation of many technological advancements for that time. Through these creations the Civil War became the first modern war. There were many new weapons created from new bullets to give a solder a wider range, to artillery such as cannons. These weapons allowed for more fatalities. The use of balloons during the Civil War was introduced by Thaddeus Lowe. President Lincoln saw the use of these balloons to be beneficial to the war, he funded the Aeronautics program. Balloons were used in a various number of campaigns, without them many men would not have been able to see their position relative to the Confederate Army.…
The American civil war was one of the toughest and deadliest wars in American history. This was where the Confederate States of America fought for their independence. It took place from 1861 when the war broke out till April 9th 1865 when confederate commander Robert E. Lee surrendered at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House. It was one of the earliest true industrial wars. Industrial knowledge was used to produce weapons in mass-production. Steamships and railroads were used to supply troops and the telegraph which was relatively new was used in communication. Practices of total war were being used in the civil war. This shows that this was a tough war that needed the best…
The American Civil War allowed american weaponry to advance from slow and insufficient to fast and useful. The Civil War is often referred to as the first ¨modern¨ war in history, and this is characterized by American weaponry. Early weapons used in the Revolutionary War were self muzzle-reloading weapons which were slow and insufficient. While the ¨modern¨ weapons used in the Civil war were Springfield rifle to Colt revolver to 12-pound howitzer, there was a great advancement of weapons from flintlocks to bolt-action rifles. Civil War weapons evolved ever since the last American War, with the addition to cartridges onto firearms which allow someone to reload faster and then shoot again.…
The second largest technological advance in the Civil War was the Minie Ball which was used through the entire war. The bullets technology advances lead to greater accuracy, and more damage. Because of these advances there was more casualties, which made the Civil War a very gruesome war for all of America.…
