AT&T is a major phone corporation. This company has also taken a huge stance on texting and driving. The number of people killed in distraction-affected crashes decreased slightly from 3,360 in 2011 to 3,328 in 2012. An estimated 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver, this was nine percent increase from the estimated 387,000 people injured in 2011. Texting is becoming an epidemic. AT&T is using their popularity to get a very powerful message across. It has commercials, ads, and billboards all over the United States promoting not to text and drive “it can wait", because it is very dangerous; not only for their life but others as well. This somewhat graphic commercial asserts that an ordinary person can take their eyes off the road and in an instance destroy his/her live or the lives of others, and does this effectively through graphic images, common text message subject matter, and a negative theme.…

In “Should Text Messaging While Driving Be Banned? NO," Editor Radley Balko explains that we need to get over the idea that with a new law we can solve every bad habit and to stop passing laws that will be enforced for the reason that we have to do something about a problem. Radley Balko argues against a proposal to impose a law banning text messaging while driving in the U.S. Texting while driving should not be banned is the issue addressed in his article. The thesis of Balko’s article is that it’s obviously thoughtless to text while driving but what’s the difference from just glancing at your phone while following your GPS directions than typing out a message? There are many other reasons why drivers get distracted and the author also reflects on the enforceability problem, which lies in how can a police officer witness a text being typed while driving?…

The Frontier Post, an English newspaper mostly based in the Middle East, released a particularly powerful advertisement in 2013 to promote safe driving. At first glance, it would appear that the advertisement is a picture of a firearm, front and center, placed in the spotlight of an otherwise gloomy backdrop. In reality, the advertisement depicts a set of car keys, cleverly arranged to resemble a revolver. Underneath the gun lies a very somber message, “Takes one life every 25 seconds, Drive Safe”. The bottom right corner displays the organization’s information, and the bottom left corner offers a citation for the hair raising statistic. One could quickly deduce that the Frontier Post was targeting people’s susceptibility to fear with this ad. The advertisement uses fear in order to evoke emotional responses to successfully fulfil its purpose.…

Texting and driving is one of the most debated topics in society. Whether it affects all people or whether or not you’re just good at multi tasking. Yet, all people would come to the agreement that it is one the most dangerous activities to participate in and ends millions of lives yearly. "Drivers and Legislators Dismiss Cellphone Risks” published in New York Times by Matt Richtel and "LOL? Texting While Driving Is No Laughing Matter: Proposing a Coordinated Response to Curb this Dangerous Activity" by Alexis M. Farris are two articles that present variations of ethos, pathos, and logos and make identical arguments claiming that texting and driving is not only dangerous but is shaping the way Americans live. Both articles illustrate several accounts on the dangers of texting and driving and how the activity could potentially be stopped proving both articles to be well accounted for. While Matt Richtel and Alexis. M. Farris both reach the conclusion that texting while driving has a negative impact on people, Farris' article is far deeper and less biased then Richtel's who relies more on personal inference rather than factual evidence.…
