Statistical Methods and Applications
My daughter is currently studying international economics and business law. She has taken several statistic and advanced actuary classes, after completing this course I have a great deal of respect for her ambitions and studies. Statistics has never been particularly interesting to me only because I did not realize how much I depend on statistical studies in my personal and professional life. I was afraid that I would find this class too difficult and struggle to complete the course. I have to admit that there were times I had trouble understanding the material. Once I started exploring the material I found it very useful and interesting. I was surprised how much I already use statistics and now that I have a better understanding, I have enjoyed using the knowledge I have gained from this class.
I am disappointed that I have been influenced in the past one way or another by statistical evidence presented without having a full understanding of how to interpret evidence presented. While statistics was not a required class when I was a nursing student, I now feel it should be a required course. Given the large role statistics play in the medical field I am frustrated that not even basic statistical understanding was taught in my nursing classes. I do not even recall a single lecture on statistics. I was relieved to learn, after speaking to my daughter, that statistics classes are now a required course in high school. Statistics plays an important role in nursing and we have been using the results from statistical studies in the medical field for a very long time. Florence Nightingale used statistics to prove the effectiveness of simple nursing interventions. Nightingale kept meticulous records in regards to the effectiveness of nursing. These records were used to reform nursing care. Her basic concepts regarding nursing remain in effect today.
