Wen Zhengming's Clearing After Snow
The painting Clearing after snow in a wintry grove of trees is a masterpiece of the Ming dynasty painter Wen Zhengming (1470-1559). This painting depicts a peaceful scene of mountains and trees after snow, with the inscription of Wen’s close friend, Wang Chong (1494-1533). By analyzing the imageries and allusions of the poem and the pictorial meaning of the painting, this short essay will interpret the identity of Wen Zhengming as a virtuous scholar and amateur painter.
This painting was Wen Zhengming’s gift for Hua Xia, who was a philosopher and art collector. He finished this painting after an excursion to a mountain valley after snow in the year (1533) when he secluded from the court. The painting depicts a graceful snow landscape of Suzhou

Since Daoists believe that a human should indulge in nature, release their heart, and meditate in peace to find the meaning of life, their central belief agrees with the pursuit of reclusion. Therefore, the practice of Daoism, the indigenous religion and philosophy, became a necessary part of the hermit culture. In painting’s foreground, several villas locate amidst a wintry grove of trees and two Daoren sit apart silently and peacefully. One looks upward, appreciating the trees covered with snow while the other leans down, enjoying the sound of the water. On the other side of the veranda-bridge, another villa hides among trees. The villa might be the “pavilion” mentioned in the verse, “Daoren are sitting in the lofty pavilion”. However, as the trail extends further, valley, water, and trees gradually disappear in the cloud, leading our sight to the snow-covered mountain behind. At the vanishing point, a group of temple roofs is still discernible (fig.2). What would be the mysterious temples and how is the hidden scenery evokes people’s interests of exploration. Actually, none of those is important because the most precious thing is the reclusion itself. Though there was a remarkable development of Daoism during the Yongle (1402-1424) and Jiajing (1507-1567) reigns because of imperial support, the force that drives scholars to seclude is the political …show more content…
All of these make him deserves the title of Shaowei Star, the name of the most respected scholar. Moreover, regarding the brushwork and ink applied, there is sensible freedom in the painting. Wen Zhengmin’s classical loose brush depicts the mountain and lots of places were kept white to represent the snow. Sky and water are in light ink, creating the pleasant calmness and quietness while ocher the trunks and rocks contrast sharply against the light background. Since Wu School painters did not need to meet the requirement of the patron, the free spirit in their painting could not be imitated by Zhe School painters easily. When mentioned Wu School, it is Shen Zhou who established Wu School, but Wen Zhengming who promoted it to its peak. Considering the function, or say, the meaning of the painting, Wu School and Zhe School shared different ideas. The former believed the painting should be a pure form of art pursuit, so people named the Wu School painters as an amateur painter. On the contrary, painting for making money was widely accepted by Zhe School painter, which is the reason why people sometimes think they are artists. An art critic of Ming Dynasty named Wang Zhideng once said: . 王穉登又评论:(文征明)笔力扛鼎,非仇英辈所能梦见也。意思是文征明画中的风格气质,仇英这种画家做梦都梦不到。.”This free spirit is and essential trait of a true Shi Da Fu and Wen Zhengming also deemed it as a key point that enhances an artwork. A great painting should be full of Shiqi, the

Shen Zhou's Poet on a Mountaintop differs from that of Yin Hong's, Hundreds of Birds Admire the Peacocks in many ways. Shen Zhou's painting is very simple with very little detail. His painting is predominantly of the landscape with a person located on the top of the mountain. This is contrast to Yin Hong's painting where there are no people in the whole painting. Yin Hong's painting is also very detailed with many birds and trees, which is a characteristic of Chinese court paintings. On the contrary, Shen Zhou also only uses one color in his painting. It appears he uses grays, but this is created from washes, meaning watered down black in spread across the painting to make it appear as if it were a gray. This color difference is arguably the major visual variation between Shen Zhou's and Yin Hong's paintings. Another visual…

The Forest Chamber at Ju’ou, by Wang Meng, is a painting of thick dense tress, buildings in the hill sides, waves flowing through the painting. This painting has many visual and yet somewhat cluttered layers with depth to it. The depth starts at the bottom of the picture and works its way up where your eye is drawn to the body of water to the top right. The body of water opens up the painting so the viewer doesn’t feel enclosed into it. The trees get smaller towards the top of the painting showing depth in the landscape.…

The belligerent relationship between the states of China evoked a sentiment of distress among the population. “Armies of ten thousand soldiers”i marched into battle based on a general’s whim, rather than any type of moral purpose. The loss of life was astounding and the people needed a beacon of hope to look for in this blight: this guiding light was the philosophy of Daoism. The Dao-Dejing was the apotheosis of Daoist ideals: it touched on a variety of social, philosophical, and spiritual concepts. It was a “combination of several different teachings from Daoist masters,”ii intended for the Chinese society to model all aspects…

Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The focus on social harmony and respect are also evident in the scroll painting Admonitions of the Imperial Instructress to Court Ladies, which relates to seven Confucian stories about wifely devotion and rightness (Text 342). The story revealed in this painting exhibits Lady Feng placing herself between a vicious bear and her husband, the emperor, making it is easy to assume that she is expressing both her devotion and respect towards him. Attaining self-discipline not only encompassed the teachings of being motivated and controlled but also focused on the cultivation of one's self. In works of art, this becomes obvious simply by observing the brushstrokes of both paintings and calligraphy, both of which were believed to reveal the artist's true self and his improvement with self-discipline. This act of self-discipline required the artist to harmoniously orchestrate skill, patience, and their overall understanding of Confucian philosophy, which would be reflected in works of art.…

As researchers are saying bullying in schools is becoming more common, and nothing is really being done about it. In the article Bullying In Schools author Ron Banks states some statistics, “approximately 15 percent of students are bullied regularly or are initiators of bullying”. When students are being bullied they never really tell anybody about it because they don’t want to be known as a “tattle tale”, and get bullied more. Most of bullying comes from children who are living in a home with physical punishment, so they learn to be aggressive and mean. “60 percent of those characterized as bullies in grades 6-9 had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24.”# The main reason why kids become bullies is so they get a reaction,…

Fan Kuan had demonstrated this through the usage of clear outlines of the subjects to reinforce their dimensionality, rendering them to be more alive in the painting. With contrasting ink tones in the painting, this contributes to creating an illusion of space, on top of generating the mood and atmosphere of the scenery. As much as the painter is being inspired by his religion, this landscape painting has been successful in making the viewers feel as if they are inside the picture. It is no wonder that such masterpiece is recognized as one of the model landscape paintings in the Chinese art history with Fan Kuan’s intricate artistic…
