Dear Editor,

I am writing to tell you that I disagree very strongly about the whole topic of whaling, I think that it should stop at once because of the amount we are killing is unbelievable, and I would hate to say it but if we keep on going at this rate, there is a chance that the whale could face extinction, I only found out the other day that there are an estimated 5000 whales killed every year.

Firstly once you have killed a whale it takes a longer time to replace it, when females have babies every 1 to 3 years and they are pregnant with the baby from 10 months for a smaller whale and for the bigger whales 16 months, so if people just keep on taking and taking it is going to take longer for all whale species to repopulate.

Secondly the way the whales are hunted and killed is absolutely disgusting and cruel, the explosive harpoons should be banned, what they do to the whale when they are shot is terrible, as some of you may not know when a explosive harpoon is shot into a whale, first it punctures the whales skin making extreme loss of blood and secondly it explodes all the insides of their bodies personally I think it is pure filth.

Thirdly killing whales also leads to other animals such as birds, fish, seals, krill and penguins overpopulating which effects the balance of the world, most hunting has restrictions and so does whaling, they are only allowed to hunt a certain amount each year normally the number changes but some people hunt illegally and we have no idea how many whales they are taking every year, this is probably the reason why there is a problem.

All I am trying to say here is that we should majorly slow down or stop whaling because I am sure no one wants to see this beautiful animal become extinct, and knowing that we could of changed

Using killer whales as entertainment is unfair/inhumane, and not appropriate for others enjoyment because in the film, “Blackfish,” dates back to 1983, where a man is interviewed on capturing Tilikum, who showed emotion while telling his story. Tilikum was taken away from the wild, his mother, and family as a baby whale. As the men were trying to capture Tilikum, the mother and rest of the family were around the boat, calling for each other, and trying to help Tilikum to get away. It is such a sad thing to see or even think about, imagine someone just taking what doesn’t belong to them. The men showed no feelings or emotion on just taking the baby whale away and not even caring. “…killer whales that live in captivity more likely to suffer…

“ .. Animals they hold are better off in human care and perhaps even enjoy it.” ("WSPA") Yes, because they really enjoy dying. We’re pretty much killing them for our own entertainment. The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre says that they’re “helping whales and dolphins reproduce and are raising awareness for species survival”, when actually, having these mammals captive is the cause of their population decreasing. The aquarium is there for them when they’re sick, and they try to do the best of their ability to save them, but in some cases, they can’t. They can’t stop the whale from endless circling. They can’t perk their drooping dorsal fins. They can’t keep them from getting depressed. And they can’t stop the harmful things the whales are going to do to people.…

The Japanese whale hunters also believe that placing a ban on whaling rather than hunting other species is a bit conflicting. For instance, a very important ingredient in Japanese cuisine, Bluefin tuna, is way more endangered than the Minke whales that the Japanese hunt. Also fishermen share the opinion that if whaling is considered cruel, so is the slaughtering of cattle in the factory farming system, which is globally accepted (Zhang, 2015). Still, the main reason why the Japanese hunt whales is the annual yield of…

The history of whaling has been consistently marked by irregularities and breaches despite an international concern about the protection of whales for over fifty years. From the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in London in 1949, which approved the creation of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), has held 56 meetings (in addition to five stages) to discuss the future of these animals (McMillan, 1999).…

I don't even think that the people care about the whales I mean you pull the animals right out of the ocean which is their home and rip them apart from their own family if that happened to me I would be pretty made. Whales in captivity have killed many people so I don’t even think it is safe to put them in captivity, they did not kill anyone in the ocean but now they are because they are in captivity. Whales are so friendly to us they have never done anything to hurt us but, we are hurting them, just…

While they are not an endangered species, they are hunted mercilessly by the fish industry especially off the coasts of China, Japan and parts of the North Pacific by the Russians (Ivashchenko 73). This extreme hunting has left the oceans with an unknown number of whales and thus, keeping them in facilities such as SeaWorld helps to replenish their numbers. However, since SeaWorld no longer catches or buys wild whales and instead breeds them for the very purpose of continuing the gene pool as Hardgrove describes in his book, it doesn’t help any animals still left in the wild. In fact, having such high numbers in captivity, while still allowing whaling practices to continue, we encourage whaling to go on. We can’t both praise whale captivity, and leave whales in nature to fend for themselves if we are really worried about…

Hunting whales have been an important part of the culture and survival of the Makah tribe for 1500 years. The Makah claim that that their right to hunt and harvest whales is secured in the treaty of Neah Bay, signed in 1855 by the US. Government. Many Makah feel that their health problems result in some degree, to the loss of their traditional diet of seafood and marine mammal meat. However the American society admires whales as remarkable mammals. Many people are concerned for their suffering during whaling operations and most oppose any form of whaling. They fear that the Makah will sell the meat to japan. The Makah hunt is being used by Japanese and other as evidence that whale populations globally are strong enough to end the ban on commercial whaling.…

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is a worldwide organisation accountable for regulations on whaling. Under the guidance of this organisation, its member countries meet annually on a regular basis and discuss issues regarding whaling (IWC 2011). After long-term discussions, Japan’s whaling practices have been restricted, and Japan is currently only allowed to perform whaling in the name of research in the northwestern Pacific and the Antarctic. (Morikawa 2009:5). Since this commercial whaling moratorium, Japan strives for the ‘’resumption of whaling based on research and scientific surveys’’ (ibid., p.3). A couple of significant facts suggest that Japan’s stated argument is a smokescreen to hide income–based motives. This essay will question Japan’s pro-whaling argument, the right to conduct whaling as a historical and traditional practice, and argue whether it is well founded to justify the practice of commercial whaling. The Japanese pro-whaling policies debatable nature will be presented from three main aspects – cultural, environmental and monetary.…
