English Oral — Why the Japanese shouldn’t be allowed to presume whaling in the Antarctic.

Imagine being one the Earths largest creatures, swimming in a never-ending ocean before suddenly being harpooned and tortured cruelly before fading into black. My message for you today are “Ships are expendable, whales are not”.

Good Morning/Afternoon Mrs Arnold and classmates. Today I will be talking to you about the reasons why the Japanese shouldn't be allowed to presume whaling in the Antarctic.

For all those who aren’t familiar with the term whaling, it is the disgraceful practice of hunting and killing whales, pushing many whale species to the brink of extinction and something must be done about it. Yes, I am firmly against whaling for many reasons:…

and that the Japanese should not presume whaling in the antarctic.

The international court later ruled that whaling in the antarctic by the Japanese was illegal and ordered them to stop. However this is not the end of the story as the Japanese claimed in December 2015 that they will resume whaling in the Antarctic while already carrying out whaling activities in the North Pacific. This has to stop.

All of the hunted whales species on Earth have been seriously affected as their population have decreased dramatically, the numbers in some species of whales have even dropped down 90%. There has been also cases where whales have been hunted to extinction such as the Atlantic Grey Whale. What many people don’t realise is that whale populations take a very long time to recover, only being able to have one calf every 2-3 years which then the young has to survive the countless dangers of the ocean, with the added danger of being culled for their meat, oil and blubber. Something that we can

This year alone, Japan plans to kill 333 Minke Whales for “scientific research” and uses this reason to help deter outsiders from their commercial fishing mentions Melissa Chan in her article called Japan Sets Out to Kill Hundreds of Minke Whales Despite Global Opposition. Due to this recent announcement the global community has been in an uproar and demands an immediate halt to Japans whaling. This has been an on going issue for multiple years and has become such a problem that the International Union For Conservation Of Nature recommended specific quotas for every country. Japan is one of the only countries that still practices whaling at an alarming rate and sells these animals meat at fishing markets despite its unpopularity now for most…

Writer's Statement For my text production I chose to compose an expository piece (informative speech) called ‘No-way out of Norway’ after I was inspired by the novel, Moby Dick and its negative description of whales as ‘monstrous beings’. My overall intention in writing my piece for Australian conservationists was to uncover the truth behind the Norwegian whaling industry, an industry readily overlooked in favour of the more brutal Japanese traders. The intended audience of my piece was people attending Brisbane's conservation through sustainable use of wildlife conference.…

The history of whaling has been consistently marked by irregularities and breaches despite an international concern about the protection of whales for over fifty years. From the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in London in 1949, which approved the creation of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), has held 56 meetings (in addition to five stages) to discuss the future of these animals (McMillan, 1999).…

While they are not an endangered species, they are hunted mercilessly by the fish industry especially off the coasts of China, Japan and parts of the North Pacific by the Russians (Ivashchenko 73). This extreme hunting has left the oceans with an unknown number of whales and thus, keeping them in facilities such as SeaWorld helps to replenish their numbers. However, since SeaWorld no longer catches or buys wild whales and instead breeds them for the very purpose of continuing the gene pool as Hardgrove describes in his book, it doesn’t help any animals still left in the wild. In fact, having such high numbers in captivity, while still allowing whaling practices to continue, we encourage whaling to go on. We can’t both praise whale captivity, and leave whales in nature to fend for themselves if we are really worried about…

Every December, a fleet of hungry, evil whaling vessels set sail from Japan to commence their annual hunt on the minke and humpback whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary in the Southern Ocean. At the same time there is a crew of passionate volunteers making ready their vessels to make the same journey to the Southern Ocean, but they are not going there to whale. They are going there to do whatever is necessary to make sure Japan does not kill any whales as it is illegal to kill whales in this sanctuary in Antarctica. They are the Sea Shepherds and they operate under the United Nations World Charter for Nature. Which gives citizens the right to uphold laws when governments are too scared to do so. These are their battles this is their war.…

The history of commercial whaling is a long dark period in our time. It is full of the bloodshed of many innocent creatures. When commercial whaling started in 1910 the average numbers of whales killed per year were around 12,000. Then 30 years later the number jumped to 40,000. This was decimating to the whale populations, some near the brink of extinction. Then in 1946 the IWC (International Whaling Commission) was formed. The IWC was created to help the regulation of whaling. They placed moratorium on commercial whaling, thus banning its practices. But by the time this happened the whale populations were dwindling and the prey from these creatures were gaining numbers. Now the numbers of whales are…

One of Japan’s excuse for whaling is that it is for “science purposes”. First of all, that excuse for whaling has been proven a lie. Scientists say that Japan’s whaling program is absolutely unscientific. According to International Student Volunteers, whaling is when whales are being harvested of meat, oil, and other products. Whale meat is not used as much as it was after World War 2. In an article from The Sydney Morning Herald called Deep fears drive Japanese whaling, it claims that, “Nor does Japan, a highly developed First World nation, have any need to supplement its supplies of protein with whale meat as it did in the dark days that followed the Second World War. Environmental groups such as Sea Shepherd point out that Japan now holds thousands of tonnes of whale in cold storage.” (Watson 1). This demonstrates that whale meat is not needed if it is just being put into storages. Therefore, whaling is not necessary. In an article from Treehugger called 18% of Grade Schools in Japan Feed Whale to Kids, it explains that nobody wants to buy the whale meat, so the solution was to sell it to schools in Japan. According to the text, it says, “While there's certainly a place for whales in grade schools -- it should be in the students' imagination, not their stomachs.” (Messenger 1). This quote demonstrates that there is no place for whale…

Hello, students of River Islands, Mrs. Kendrick, opposing and supporting gents. and ladies of River Islands, for the past few days I have been gathering evidence, a claim, and researching on why we need to stop, major sea exploration. For in response to any who try to convince me otherwise for the exploration of the sea is no, for if you are to go the depths of the sea imagine the negatives of exploring the ocean like, the risks of illness, the wasting of resources with ,the population of trash in our ocean expanding to a unfathomable size is too much. For I dream that our economy be fixed, for I dream, that our ocean be clean, for I dream that our children will look outside but not at a polluted ocean but a clean ocean of beauty and wonder.…

Whaling has been a controversial issue around the world for centuries. . The hunting of whales has been going on since the prehistoric times, but the controversy of whether it is right or wrong didn’t begin until about one hundred years ago (Wesolowski ). It has turned into an ethical debate about whether or not it is right. While some people around the world see the hunting of whales as immoral, there are countries and cultures view it the same as hunting any other animal and being an important part of their cultures. Each group backs their arguments up with their own ethical beliefs which makes it difficult to decide what truly the right way is.…

Introduction The killing of whales has been an issue of ethical controversies for many decades. In 1982, several countries gathered to draft The International Whaling Commission (IWC) to safeguard of whale stock and to enforce the provisions and of revising the provisions to encourage both the conservation and utilization of whale resources. Despite an international moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan, Iceland and Norway have been whaling under the guise of “lab coat” and their objection to the moratorium. The International Whaling Commission – Rules and Regulation The International Whaling Commission instituted laws and regulations to protect whales and to safeguard the existing whale stock. Since, 1971 laws have been regulated and made it illegal to kill, injure or harass any sort of marine mammal species under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and additionally, instituted Endangered Species Act in 1973 to protect both endangered of extinction species and species likely to be endangered in the near future.…
