Liberty is what makes people want to immigrate to the United States, in order to have freedom, rights and to fulfill the “American dream”. There are many freedoms and rights granted by the Bill of Rights. However, it has evolved throughout time, as personal liberties have expanded and people having to fight, in order to defend their own freedoms. There are conflicts that are persistent over personal liberties expanding when it violates the community norms. Government control and economic freedom links to the idea of wanting a limited government. It lets all individuals to be heard whether if they may be the majority or the minority. of the group would hold the popular sovereignty.
As America has a long history of slavery, segregation and discrimination, one cannot say that everyone was treated equally in America’s political system. There are still many discriminations and biases people have against other races and different genders. The Declaration of Independence clearly stated that “all men are created equal”, yet there were still slaves at that time. It wasn’t until after the Civil War and the 14th amendment adopted that the Constitution provided equal protection against discrimination. The Voting Rights Act provided African Americans to be treated as equal citizens and guaranteed suffrage. Before the 14th amendment and the Voting Rights Act, there seemed to be no political equality, making it harder for people to participate in political events. In modern society, individuals now have the right to vote, but there are now other problems at hand. There is no real equality amongst every individual as there are police brutality and the social class pyramid. Most people may agree that democracy may be the best form of government and that the importance is placed into the people’s hands so technically the entire political power goes to the people, not the government.
The system of democracy was supposed to have citizens participate and concoct themselves over their leaders; however, since it is only based on the opinions of the majority and not the minorities, it can go against the minorities liberty and equality. An example of majority would be the House of Representative as the house is directly elected by the people. It was ideal for the majority rule over the minority to work in the political system, but the Founding Fathers feared that the majority will take over and become tyrannical, in which individual liberties would be
violated.
