Good evening, my name is Stephanie Apfelbacher, I am here to say (SLIDE 1) Don’t Text and Drive you Could Save a Life. Maybe you have been tempted, sitting at the wheel in traffic; you hear the familiar beep of a text-message. It could be your boss needing the final sale numbers of the day or your friend needing advice on what outfit to wear to the party. Traffic is backed up and you know if will take just a minute to reply back, so you do. You think, there is little risk then BAM (SLIDE 2) you rear end the car in front of you because they stopped and you did not see in order to stop in time. This is what happened to a 16 year old’s car when she decided to driving while texting, she hit a parked car. Today I am here to persuade you to not text while driving. Driving while texting, is very dangerous, costly and should be illegal to all age of drivers in all states.
There are two major dangers to worry about while driving and texting. There have been thousands of deaths due to texting while driving. The University of N. Texas Health Center reported during …show more content…
2001-2007 16,141 lives was claimed by driving whild texting. Driver’s eyes were distracted by texting for 4.6 seconds. According to the National Safety Council 1.6 million crashes are caused by usage of cell phones and driving while texting. During that 4.6 seconds your eyes are off the road due to composing a text message a car in front of you may stop abruptly or a pedestrian may walk out in front of you. Melissa T was killed on September 28, 2005 by a driver who was texting she was hit at 65 miles per hour and broke her next in two places and was pronounced dead on arrival. On January 13, 2010, Ashley Halsey with the Washington Post reported 28% of traffic accidents occur when people talk on cell phones or send text messages while driving. Clemson University Psychology Department did a simulated driving study and reported that texting and use of ipods cause drivers to leave their lanes by 10% more. (SLIDE 3) This is Michelle’s 2002 Ford Mustang that she wrecked because she was drifting between lanes and hit a car head on. Let’s not forget that these dangers can turn very costly just as fast as sending a text message.
Depending on the accident you could lose your insurance claim and/or end up in a legal battle due to a felony charge.
Insurance companies check phone records to determine if the driver was texting during the accident. If found guilty you can lose your claim and have out of pocket expenses with the damage done or medical bills of the victim’s. If you are responsible for a loss of life you may have court fees fighting for your time behind bars or be sued by the victim’s family. Right now you can be ticketed $110.00 and fine could double for additional offenses. A study done by Harvard University found that 330,00 people were injured and 2,600 deaths occur per year because of driving while texting. With these dangers and costs in mind along with all the lost lives from texting while driving now is the time to stop texting while driving for all
ages.
Oklahoma does have a ban on novice drivers who text while driving for a secondary offense. Senate Bill 146 by Senator Jerry Ellis, D-Valliant is trying to ban all drivers from driving while texting and could go in effect November 1, 2011. The fines would also be raised to $175.00 and $500.00 for additional offenses and if you’re involved in an accident the fines will double. (SLIDE 4) There are currently 30 states that ban texting for all drivers and 8 that have a ban for texting for novice drivers. Only two states (OK/TX) ban bus drivers from texting. Even though we might have stricter penalties for driving while texting it’s up to us to change our ways.
So the next time you think about texting while driving, please don’t! Those 4.6 seconds could save lives and money if you choose not to drive while texting. Think about your safety and everyone else on the road. Driving should be distraction free, if this happened many lives would be saved. Your entire focus should be on the road not on your phone. (SLIDE 5) Keep roads safe and don’t Drive While Texting!!!
