What Can We Learn from Math.
8. What can we learn from the study of Mathematices?

Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. The study of mathematics is also regarded as a compulsory part of our education. In my opinion, studying math can instill in students the value of our own culture and history, cultivate our development of logical thinking and stimulate growth of society as well. However, the study of math does not always bring benefits back, it may let people put too much faith on math statistics and it may make students lose their interests in math study due to excess rigid demands.

First of all, it is important for people to realize that education can transit cultural value to us and the study of mathematics posses a remarkable position in education system. So, mathematics can be a tool to enhance our understanding of cultural heritage. This can be seen in China, the oldest systematic math originated from Zhan guo period. A book called ”Mo Jing” recorded many definitions and math ideology. Through the study of math, we can find out famous mathematicians like Liu Yi, Zhu Shijie and Shen Kuo so as to learn the history of math and prompt our understanding of Chinese culture. As we can see, learning math can transit the culture and academic heritage.

In the second place, calculation is believed to be an intrinsic skill and math may be the most basic course we should master. In addition, applied math can also exercise our brains more flexible and grow logical thinking so that help us in the future life. For instance, the Apple corporation leader, Steve Jobs, even if he had not finished his study in University, he did a big success in IT area based on his logical and creative thinking. This tells us that the study of mathematics will develop our multiple competencies so that it could flexibly adapt to and widen our opportunities in the future life and not just helping us

Mathematics is highly valued in our society but for many students the thought of learning mathematics is daunting. Learning mathematics in primacy school may have been a positive experience but it may have also been filled with frustration and anxiety. If a teacher has a negative view of mathematics then their students will adopt this view. Students must be shown the relevance and purpose of mathematics in a real life and meaningful way. There is no doubt that mathematics is an indispensable tool for understanding our world. As we move through the twenty-first century no one can be clear on what mathematics will be needed, but it is clear that students will need to know how to reason mathematically and apply mathematical thinking to a wide range of situations (Reys, R. E., Lindquist, M. M., Lambdin, D. V., Smith, N. L., Rogers, A., Falle, J., Frid, S., Bennett, S. (2012). Helping Children Learn Mathematics (1st Australian ed.). Any reader will be entertained with the problems of mathematical teachings at schools as stated by the author. Mister Lockhart is very passionate about mathematics as an art form and also he is persuasive with it as well also he wrote this book from his personal opinion. In addition, from reading this book one can gather that mathematical teachings should be done as exploration not as blanch instruction. Personally, I don’t disagree with this take on mathematic instruction it’s unique and diverse. But, I fear others may desert from his proposition of mathematics being an art form rather than an academic.…

As I type this sentence millions of students all over the country are in their math class either a) struggling to open their eyelids or b) tapping their fingers due to boredom and impatience. They have all failed to understand how the topic would later come of use. Although mathematics may seem to be “unnecessary” it teaches our brains to strategize, and think differently through the use of trial and error and problem solving. Most individuals consider mathematics to be a dreadful topic, and can never really comprehend how it can be beneficial in our lives on a daily basis. Most of the time, they may seem to be correct. However, they are not. Most of the time, we are using its strategies without even acknowledging it. We use it for almost anything we do: currency, measurement, time, etc. Two examples of math we use on a regular basis are Euler and Hamiltonian Circuits.…

Mathematics is fundamentally a translation of the tangible (and sometimes intangible) into abbreviated and simplified forms of actualization. It has been used for many centuries to put exact labels on time (e.g. counting lunar cycles was once used in its primitive form for counting days and years), quantity (e.g. people frequently had to count their money, farm animals and even slaves) and indeed quality (e.g. to know the purity of elements and substances), and is still being used today in every aspect of our lives. Maths has become such an asset, which is so reliable for our mental and physical survival, that we now subconsciously use its calculations for almost every decision we make.…

I remember from a book titled “Letters to a Young Mathematician” by Ian Stewart that he said, “Mathematics is the shared social construct created by people who are aware of certain opportunities. If math were a building, it would resemble a pyramid erected upside down. The taller the building becomes, the more space to build more.” I could not agree more. Mathematics is an opportunity. It should never stop growing, and neither should I. Ever since I declared mathematics as a major, I vowed to myself to always be willing to learn and to keep my minds working. After four years of education highly focused on mathematics, I have come to the conclusion that without an effort to delve into it, mathematics will remain as an ugly monster. However, once one sets foot in it, one will find nothing more delightful than mathematics. I loved learning mathematics for the past few years and I believe the best is yet to come.…
