A civil war is when a war breaks out in the same country. The reason why the civil war broke out in England in 1642 was because the king and parliament could not agree on anything.
In the political side of things the war broke out because of short and long term things. In the short term that parliament wanted to control England’s army but the king said he should because England’s monarch usually controlled the army.
The other short term reason was, in 1642 parliament passed 19 propositions to the king all of them reduced the power of the king in his country. The textbook shows that king was attempted to be used because in 1629 the king closed down parliament for 11 years, but soon after that 11 years the king desperately needed money so his re-opened parliament to ask if they would let him make new taxes for more money. Parliament would only agree if he allowed a few propositions, the king did agree but then got into an argument with parliament again. When the king did re-open parliament they asked for the 19 propositions. I think this was unfair because the king only agreed for a few propositions. I think that this was the reason it tipped the country into civil war because after parliament won the argument the king left London to raise an army to fight.
There were lots of other causes like in the religions side of things. The short term that stands out for me was that there was a catholic rebellion in Ireland against their protestant rulers. People were saying that the king was behind the rebellion. This could have sent England in to civil war because England is a protestant country and if the king was secretly a catholic it could have changed England to becoming a protestant country. This point was backed up by the kings’ wife being a catholic who had her own catholic chapel that sometimes she took their son in to pray.
In the long term the king and the archbishop laud made reforms to the church. They said the churches
