Health disparities refer to the glaring differences in the distribution of the burden of diseases, injuries and opportunities to access the available healthcare services from the facilities in a given society. Each of these differences, as Flores & Lin (2013, p. 10) observe, is preventable and almost always affects the segments of the society that are at the most disadvantage. These obstacles to healthcare access are brought about by among others racial or ethnic origin, socioeconomic status, age, gender or geographical location as well as sexual orientation.

Among the racial/ ethnic group most likely to be affected by the health disparities are the Blacks and Hispanics. This is because of the high prevalence rate of diseases among the two ethnic/ racial groups. It is also due to the fact that the members of these two groups are more likely to experience socioeconomic disadvantages, which as Anderson, Davidson & Baumeister (2013, p. 39) point out, places them at a higher risk of poverty hence missing out on healthcare services. Causes of health disparities
Of the causes of healthcare disparity, the most common are social and economic factors such as the level of education and the employment status both of which are great indicators of the likelihood of poverty among individuals hence their ability, or otherwise, to access healthcare services from the available facilities. Gender and ethnicity are also key determinants of healthcare disparities with Blacks and Hispanics generally more likely to face discrimination in access to healthcare services, claims the National Centre for Health Statistics (2016). This is even worse for Black and Hispanic women.
