The common people had many issues during the Czar reign, but through the revolution these problems remained or degraded even further. The St. Petersburg Bread Riot was one of the first actions of the revolution. The people in St. Petersburg were starving due to a shortage of bread so the housewives rebelled and rioted demanding more bread. The protests spread and eventually the Czar were overthrown. Even when the bolsheviks took over, the famine remained and no one did anything to fix this issue. During the five year plans and the Russian Civil War, poverty and famine began to degrade even than before. Farmers tried to rebel by destroying food so the government would not be able to take it but Stalin created collective farms were all the farmers would farm under supervision. At one point, common people began to rely on cannibalism to feed their family as there was no food available. They would kill children and families and still no one noticed or tried to stop the famine. War Communism also made poverty a larger problem. As the soldiers pillaged the towns, the people had no more belonging or money and so poverty became an even larger problem in Russia. Throughout these events, the people had no say and no way to change their position. Their rights were stripped from them and the common people were forced to live as slaves for the bolshevik party.
