Even though not all puritans were bad Christians, those who broke the puritan beliefs were. In the Crucible, two main characters name Abigail Williams, and John Proctor broke the three puritan beliefs: Plainness, Grace, and Divine Mission. Plainness follows the 10 commandments for example, “Thou Shall Not Kill, and Thou shall not bear false witness against its neighbor”. Grace represents the cleansing of the soul. For instance if you envy someone, you would have to be cleansed of your hatred towards that fellow person. Lastly, Divine Mission the spread of religion. During the court trail Abigail gets up with Mary Warren, the servant of the Proctors, for testifying that all the spirits did not exist, and that the poppet, a doll, was hers and not Elizabeth Proctors. Abigail soon pretends to see a yellow bird, which represented Mary Warren spirit, and was attacking her (51).
