What Does It Mean To Be A Hero

When you hear the word "hero", does your mind conjure up an image of an intrepid being with extraordinary powers? Do you visualize a superhuman whose main objective in life is to prevent evil and protect the innocent civilians? If you did, you must be envisioning the stereotypical hero (and yes, that means your answer is still valid, but it's not the answer that I was looking for). When I was a child, I too, used to believe that heroes were the ones who wore capes and would constantly fight villains in order to save the world. As I got older, I realized that being a hero doesn't mean having an exceptional crime-fighting ability, nor does it mean being this paragon of the city. You would think that by this time, everyone else in the house would be still asleep- not in my household. When I wake up in the mornings, usually one of my parents would already be at work and the other would make sure I don't sleep-in. Then, when I leave for school, the other parent goes off to work. Both of my parents work full-time jobs; in fact, my mom decided to also work a part-time job because she knows that I'm going to college soon. Every single day, I watch my parents come and go from work. Although, the connotation from that last sentence could indicate my parents being too busy- that's not what I was trying to say. Yes, my parents work a lot, but never once have they neglected me or made me feel alone. Once, they come home from work, they would cook dinner and then ask me, "How was school today, Hannah?"- it's this type of interaction that I feel is necessary between a child and parent(s). Although, my parents are most likely exhausted from work, they still provide time to make sure that I'm doing well (especially since I'm their only child, which means I need their full attention). My parents inspire me to be a
