“The Day it Happened” The theme in “The Day it Happened” is strength and liberation.
Josie is a married woman who is being abused by her Husband Ramon. By the end of the story she decides that she will leave him. She says to him “ I warned you. I said I would leave you if you ever hit me again. I’m not safe with you. Our child is not safe with you. I’m going now. (Morales 75-76) When he finds out she’s leaving him; he breaks down and says “Don’t go.” “You’re too young to understand.” “We’re married for life.” “I’ll love you always.” “I’ll kill myself, I swear it.” (Morales 77). In a sense, both characters are liberated. Josie is liberated from the toxic relationship and Ramon is liberated from his abusive personality when he breaks down in front of everyone. Josie is strong enough to leave and eventually Ramon is strong enough to let go. Morales uses characters to emphasize the support and closeness of the family. Josie was able to be liberated from her destructive marriage with the support and protection of her family. I think it’s also very significant that this story is told from the young teens perspective. It comes to show that young people are more intuitive on what’s going on around them than people may think. Morales uses setting to enhance the theme of the story. From the descriptions of the apartment, to the lamp lying in the back seat of the taxi; the setting is used to add depth to theme and the story.
