Symbolism in The Masque of the Red Death
“The Masque of the Red Death”, written by Edgar Allan Poe is an allegory based on the absurdity that humans think they can escape dying. The Red Death symbolizes not just death itself, but a deadly disease called Tuberculosis. Many of Poe’s loved ones die from this disease. The story portrays ideas about life and death through objects and people. Poe uses elaborate castle chambers, a giant ebony clock, and a selfish prince to carry out the underlying theme that death is inevitable.
A castle, occupied by Prince Prospero, contains seven consecutive suites, all in which are uniquely colored. Poe states that the suites are “very different” due to the “duke’s love of the bizarre” (1). Among each of the offbeat

    The introduction of Poe's famous short story, "The Masque of the Red Death" illustrates the disease that is gruesomely killing it's victims. There was sudden dizziness, sharp pains, and then profuse bleeding from the pores, lasting about half an hour until killing it's victim. As The Red Death is rapidly spreading throughout the country, Prince Prospero is optimistic and derives a plan. He decides to lock the gates of his palace inviting only a thousand of his peers to be spared from the disease.
